School memories booklet (4.5" x 6.25"); flocked (suede-like) flexible paper. Original owner: Milfred Leroy Becker, whose name is written on name page verso of title page. Original photo of Ms. Poindexter on title page, with years 1932-33 & signed in owner's hand. While most pages are blank, one page is a list of schoolmates along with the Director (Raymond Ratzlaff), Member (Joseph Eck), and Clerk (A. L. Campbell). Eleven other pages have written comments in pencil & ink from various people, such as "Your Uncle Olin." Another (named) person wrote, "My Milfred Boy, Be a good boy and stay with your music, and don't waste too much of your time with air-planes." Elden Evans put his slightly larger than postage stamp b/w photo in the book & wrote, "Dear Milfred, As you slide down the bannister of life, just remember me as a splinter in your career. Your roommate, ___ ___". Most comments are actually written 1936-38. Some of the silver stamping is worn off the front cover, but else in vg condition. A pretty nifty keepsake from the early 30s schooldays in Oklahoma. (#SHEL705) $50.00

One sheet broadside, 7" x 11 3/8", on newsprint of the period. Under the masthead, "EXTRA", & date, "ASSASSINATION. President Garfield Shot in the Baltimore and Potomac Depot at Washington." "The Assassin a Disappointed Office Seeker Name Doherty". "Intense Excitement and Conflicting Rumors." Then follows printed bulletins & dispatches beginning at 8am & continuing until noon, & finally "Later - The president cannot recover." Of course, the President lingered long, creating what a docent at his memorial monument in Cleveland called the first big modern media event. One vertical fold down the center. No chips. With the following exception, it is in very good condition with tiny wrinkles & short edge tear. The exception is that there is a long tear running in from the left edge across the top of the word, "Assassination" & up through "Extra" to the bottom of the masthead. However, when properly fitted, it is barely seen. I have chosen not to use even the fine archival tape at my disposal to close the tear, but will do so upon request of buyer. Rare. Corbitt is signed above the @ line. Henry C. Corbett was the owner of the Company, which began service between Sacramento & Portland July 1, 1866. Small hole punched in decorative left edge. Vg. condition with two edges from check page torn fairly cleanly but with slightly rough edges. A nice, early piece of Oregon & California stagecoaching. (#0508105) $32.80

The index is extensive. There is even an index of the illustrations. This attractive volume is densely packed with information on the cities & towns of the Pacific Northwest, inclusive of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, & British Columbia. Also, specific sections on climate, topography, railroads, fishing, mining, timber, rivers & harbors, Stock Raising in Montana, & Vigilantes of Montana. On the lower front paste down is the label of the book binder, Meston -Dygert. On a blank preliminary leaf is a dated signature, "F R Vautugl 1894".
