Railroad Man: John J. Thrasher

and Atlanta’s Early Years, 1839-1900
John J. Thrasher was a 21-year-old entrepreneur when he built the railroad settlement that was first called “Thrasherville” in 1839, and then “Terminus” and “Marthasville” before it was incorporated as Atlanta in 1847. His construction of a railroad embankment to link railroads from Chattanooga and Macon laid the foundation for Atlanta’s destiny as a transportation center. He remained in Atlanta for 23 years where he became one of its most prominent citizens and served in Georgia’s legislature. Today he is recognized on a federal historic marker on Marietta Street as Atlanta’s first merchant. In 1870, Mr. Thrasher bought property twenty miles northeast of Atlanta, founded the town of Norcross and became its first mayor. He named the town after Jonathan Norcross, his friend, fellow merchant and Atlanta’s second mayor. c:\users\david e. sumner\dropbox\freelance\cousin john folder\railroadman_cover_0222814.jpg
Known affectionately as “Cousin John” by friend and stranger, the gregarious entrepreneur remains today as one of Georgia’s most colorful historical figures. This 24-page booklet is the first published biography of John J. Thrasher and brings together all known historical information about him. It includes a complete bibliography and several historic photos of Mr. Thrasher.
Bucky Johnson, the mayor of Norcross, called Railroad Man a “fascinating read” and purchased 100 copies to give away at the Norcross Visitors Center.
