In either category, each student must submit a brief written summary of their original speech in English (approximately 100 words). Please submit all written summaries along with this application form.

2014 Japanese Speech Contest

Categories:
|
Contestants will be divided into two categories. Both categories will require contestants to present their own original Japanese speech on any topic.
|
Category 1:
|
• High school students
• College students who have completed or are taking 1st year or 2nd year college Japanese courses
|
Category 2:
|
• College students who have completed or are taking 3rd year or above college Japanese courses
|
Length of speech:
|
Category 1: within 3 minutes, Category 2: within 5 minutes
Points will be taken off if a contestant goes beyond the time limit.
|
Topic:
|
Any topic is acceptable.
A brief Q&A will follow each contestant’s speech.
|
Speech script:
|
• Contestants must write their original speech for the Speech Contest. Teachers and other people can only make corrections and suggestions and cannot prepare the speech for contestants.
• Contestants must submit a brief summary of their speech in English (about 100 words). English summary will be printed on the program.
•Contestants must present their speech in Japanese.

Eligibility:
|
• Each school may submit three contestants for each category.
• Contestants must be current high school or college students.
• Contestants have not lived in Japan for more than 2 years since 2004.
• Contestants come from homes where Japanese is not spoken regularly.
• Previous first prize winners of the Benron division of Georgia Speech Contest are not eligible for entry.

Prizes:
|
Category 1: Prizes awarded to first, second, and third place.
Category 2: First place is a round-trip air ticket to Japan, prizes also awarded to second and third place.
|
Judging criteria:
|
Each judge has 20 points for each contestant. The full score of 5 judges will be 100 points for each contestant. 20 points are divided into the three criteria.
• Contents : contents of the speech, originality (10 points)
• Voice: appropriate volume and speed of voice, pronunciation (5 points)
• Delivery: expression, attitude, eye contact (5 points)
Total: 20 points/judge x 5 judges = 100 points/contestant
