APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Japanese language instructors should complete this form for their students and return all applications by February 16, 2014 to the Consulate-General of Japan in Atlanta.

2014 Japan Academic Challenge

Place:

Emory University, White Hall


Levels:

Contestants will be divided into four levels.

Level 1:

• Students enrolled in first year high school-level Japanese language study

Level 2:

Level 3:


Level 4:

• Students enrolled in second year high school-level Japanese language study

• Students enrolled in third year high school-level Japanese language study

• Students enrolled in fourth year high school-level Japanese language study


Number of students in each level.

2-3 students per team

• The students of virtual schools may pair up with the students from other virtual schools

• Each school may submit two teams for each level.


Topic:

Japanese history, geography, language, current events, and other cultural aspects


Eligibility:

• Each school may submit up to two teams for each level.

• Contestants must be current high school students.

• Contestants have not lived in Japan for more than 3 months since 2009.

• Contestants come from homes where Japanese is not spoken regularly.




Format of the competition:

• The three Judges will judge throughout the competition.

• A native English speaker will read the questions throughout the competition

• Only the Final Round is open to audiences.
Preliminary Round

• Each level will have one preliminary round.

• Preliminary Round will have 20 questions and 2 Bonus questions.

• 20 questions value at 10 points each, and Bonus questions value at 5 points each.

• Questions are read only once.

During the preliminary round, each team has 30 seconds to write an answer on a provided answer sheet. Conferring is allowed between team members. Any member of the team may write the answer(s) to the question.

• The three teams with the highest score on preliminary round go on to the Final Round.
Final Round

• There are two rounds of competition: 1) a Team Round of 10 Team Questions valued at 10 points each, and 2) a Toss-Up Round of 10 Toss-Up Questions and 2 Bonus Questions valued at 5 points each.

• During the Team Round, each team has 30 seconds to write an answer on the mini-boards. Conferring is allowed between team members in the Team Round only. Any member of the team may write the answer(s) to the question.

• During the Toss-Up Round, teams will have 30 seconds to “ring-in” to signal their answer. However, a person who has rung in does not have 30 seconds to give his/her answer. The answer must be given immediately, so ring in only when you are prepared to answer.

• NO CONFERRING IS ALLOWED IN THE TOSS-UP ROUND. The team member who “rings-in” must answer the question.

• During the Toss-up Round, teams responding before a question has been read completely, will not have the benefit of having the question re-read.

• In the event that there is a tie "ring-in" on a Toss-Up Question, all teams signaling will be asked to write their answer on the paper provided.

• After a team “rings-in,” the team members who rang-in must wait to be recognized by the Moderator’s Aid.

In case of a tie-breaker, all teams should remain in the area. Students who leave the competition area may be disqualified.


Causes for Disqualification:

• Students leaving the competition site

• Use of offensive language



• Challenging or showing a lack of respect to the moderators, judges, or event staff


Prizes:

Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place

Registration:

The deadline for registration is Sunday, February 16, 2014.
