Sukhoi Superjet 100 passes noise testing program

TURIN, Italy, 14 Oct. 2010. The Sukhoi SSJ 100 from Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Co. in Moscow has passed a noise testing program performed as a part of its overall flight certification campaign with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) Aviation Register (AR). At the Cuneo-Levaldigi airport in Turin, Italy the aircraft made eight certification flights. The preliminary results show that the aircraft noise levels show full compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) CAEPIV requirements.

The same aircraft -- #95004 -- is undergoing high intensity radio frequency (HIRF) testing, in the same premises. HIRF testing methodology was elaborated by the SCAC engineering team in collaboration with Alenia Aeronautica and relevant certification authorities.

HIRF certification is required to demonstrate that the aircraft electric and electronic equipment are not influenced by external electromagnetic fields such as those produced by a TV, radio stations, or radar. HIRF testing technique consists in radiating the aircraft with radio waves whose frequencies and levels of emission are set by certification rules. The aircraft can be electrically powered or unpowered, and engines can also run. The electromagnetic fields and currents on cables inside the aircraft are measured during radiation and avionics equipment monitored to check for any malfunction. Telemetry is used to monitor aircraft parameters in real time as well as to avoid radiation exposure during testing.

"Sukhoi Superjet 100 is the first aircraft in Russia that has compliance with international noise standards proven in flight under supervision of Russian and European certification authorities," says Igor Vinogradov, senior vice president of certification for Sukhoi.

Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out in central Moscow early on Thursday, an emergencies services spokesman said.

The blaze began in an empty administrative building in Marksistskaya Street and quickly spread to a neighboring nine-floor building belonging to a watch factory. The fire was estimated as covering up to 500 meters.

"Eleven people have been evacuated, and nine of them have been admitted to hospital," the spokesman said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), on Wednesday met with religious leaders in Moscow, Russia.

Cavusoglu met separately with Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community in Moscow berl Lazar and Chairman of the Council of Muftis in Moscow Ravil Gaynuddin.

Speaking after his meeting with Gaynuddin, Cavusoglu said, improving dialogue between different cultures and religions was one of the top priorities of the PACE, adding dialogue was the best way to overcome Islamophobia, racism and xenophobia which he said had raised over the last years in Europe.

Gaynuddin, on his part, underlined that Cavusoglu was the first Muslim head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which he said was of utmost importance.

Khimki forest on Russia's road to nowhere

The controversial road through Khimki forest could be the only stretch of the Moscow – St. Petersburg highway to be built.

European funding for the rest of the route is in danger of drying up as a result of environmental protests over the destruction of the woodland to the north of Moscow.

A meeting in Brussels this week ussian ecologists and the European Commission – a part-sponsor of the road – could see the rest of the route stopped dead in its tracks.

 

Activity to cease

According to insiders at the meeting, the Europeans heard of the hard line shown to protestors opposing the road through the forest and switched the funding project from “active” to “inactive”, Kommersant reported.

Aneliya Stefanova, of eco-group BankWatch, told the paper: “During the meeting Russian activists expressed their concerns about what damage the project is causing to the environment and local residents.

“The EU institutions assured us they had stopped preparing to participate in the project.”

Back in August the European Investment Bank confirmed negotiations were “incomplete”, while the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development confirmed that there were several unresolved questions about the scheme.

“It is wrong to say that the bank has refused the project,” Richard Wallis from its Moscow office said. “But we have not yet managed to agree on conditions under which we could discuss it.”

 

Road to nowhere

While the news is a blow to the scheme as a whole, and does little for the Russian government’s image amid reports of violence against protest camps in the forest itself, it will not stop the bulldozers.

The stretch through Khimki, the 15-58km stretch of the planned intercity highway, is financed by the state budget and loans from Russian banks.

Therefore it will be completed, either through the forests or on an alternative route – but it may become a road to nowhere if the rest of the infrastructure cannot be paid for.
