CHAPTER TWO

LITRERATURE

The following is an analysis on different sources and the information they provide on topics within the field of robotics. The information will be discussed in two groups, the automation of industries and the advances of robotics.

2.1 Automation of Industries

One of the industries composed highly of robots is the automotive industry. The production of cars uses many robots with different jobs and abilities. Automation has grown so big in the automotive production factories because robots can lift heavy parts and put cars together all day and night without getting tired or going on strike for higher pay. Ehrenman (2005) reports on a certain kind of robot along the car assembly line in his article “Eyes on the Line”. It is a vision enabled robot that can find the part it is attaching to the car even if it is out of place. Robots without vision will make mistakes if the part they are responsible for is not in the exact same place every time. This can be costly for factories, so the vision enabled robot eliminates this possibility. The article is very useful for informing the reader about robots in the car industry however it does not provide any information on the ethics of robotics to argue the controversy mentioned earlier.

However, “Robots vs. the Underclass.” is an article written by John Judis (2015) that does voice on this controversy. The article speaks of the misconception that industrial automation is decreasing the number of middle class jobs. The lower-class jobs are actually the ones disappearing. This source is very useful when arguing over robotics. It brings to light the perspective of many against the expansion and advancements of robotics.
