SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Orange County Day at the State Capitol is a
special time set aside to honor the citizens of Orange County
and the county's unique contributions to the State of Texas;
and
WHEREAS, Located in the southeast corner of Texas on the
Louisiana border, Orange County is bounded on the east by the
Sabine River and on the south and west by the Neches River; and
WHEREAS, Originally the home of the Attacapa Indians, the
area saw little early exploration until the Cow Bayou settlement
was established on the east bank of the bayou; and
WHEREAS, Created from Jefferson County on January 5, 1852,
Orange County was named by George A. Patillo who had an orange
grove near the east bank of the Neches River; Madison became the
county seat and was later renamed Orange; and
WHEREAS, Two‑thirds of the county is timbered in hardwood
and short‑leaf pine forests while one‑third is coastal prairie;
the sandy loam and black alluvial soil produces an abundance of
rice, vegetables, fruits, and honey; and
WHEREAS, Rich in natural resources, Orange County is a
major producer of oil and chemicals; since oil was discovered
in 1913, the area has developed miles of modern plants known as
"Chemical Row" that produce myriad products derived from petroleum;
and
WHEREAS, The manufacture of lumber and shingles was the
first industrial development in the region when R. E. Boothe
located machinery for his sawmill near the present‑day City
of Orange in 1836; the production and processing of lumber and
shipbuilding continue to be important to the county's rich
economy; and
WHEREAS, The Port of Orange is a deepwater terminal
42 miles inland at the junction of the Sabine‑Neches and Gulf
Intracoastal Waterways; in peacetime the United States Navy
berths some 150 warships of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at the
Naval Station on the Sabine River at Orange; and
WHEREAS, Visitors and sports enthusiasts enjoy recreational
fresh and saltwater fishing, hunting, and bird‑watching in the
area's vast coastal marshes; and
WHEREAS, Orange County Day is an appropriate occasion for
the Texas Senate to recognize the important contributions that
Orange County and its people have made and will continue to make
to our state's greatness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
74th Legislature, hereby extend warmest wishes to the citizens
of Orange County for a most memorable celebration of Orange County
Day on January 30, 1995; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
memento of this notable day and as an expression of the admiration
of the Texas Senate.
