Mobile Work Zone Barrier
1. Description. Furnish and supply a mobile work zone barrier, semi-tractor, crash truck with the ability to perform rolling lane closures and necessary vehicle operator for the protection of designated work zones. The intent is to utilize this safety device in congested areas to provide enhanced safety to the on site work force and the traveling public.
2. Equipment. The mobile work zone barrier shall meet the following criteria:

Shall be an integrated, rigid wall, trailer that can be used in conjunction with a standard semi-tractor:

Shall meet the requirements of the National Co-operative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report #350, Level 3, or higher:

Shall have a steerable front and rear axle.

Shall provide variable length of work zone protection of up to a maximum of 102’, not including the TMA or the semi-tractor.

Shall include LED lighting and beacons.

Shall be capable of being configured to protect to the right or left side of the road.

Shall be equipped with an energy attenuator that meets the requirements of the NCHRP, Report #350, Level 3, or higher.
The following products are examples of mobile work zone barrier that conforms to the above requirements; other products that meet the above specifications can also be used.

3. Construction. The intent of the mobile work zone barrier use is to provide a NCHRP level 3 or higher work zone without the use of temporary concrete Barrier. The mobile work zone barrier shall be used to protect workers and delineate the lane closure in areas of need where the enhanced protection of workers is deemed desirable. The work will include supplying, locating, relocating, erecting, operating, maintaining and removal of all equipment.
The lane shall be closed in advanced of the work zone following the guidance of the MUTCD. Once the workers are removed from the work site, a traffic set up following the guidance of the MUTCD shall be placed and the mobile barrier system can be removed. Traffic control can be removed and the lane re-opened when the work is complete.
4. Measurement. The mobile barrier system will be measured by the month. Initiation of payment will be determined cooperatively between the contractor and the department.
5. Payment. The work performed and materials furnished in accordance with this Item and
measured as provided under “Measurement” will be paid for at the unit price bid for “Mobile Work Zone Barrier”. One month payment constitutes use of the system for 10 days or more. One half month payment will be defined as the system being used 10 days or less.
