and
Canadian Association for Spiritual Care
Certified Supervisor Educator, CPE: Peg Noseworthy
Supervised Pastoral Education Is:
A style of education for ministry that brings together
Professional religious leaders
Theological Students
Others interested in ministry
A comprehensive approach to personal growth and the development of professional skills for greater competence in the practice of the ministry
Education Takes Place as Students Become Involved in:
Doing and reflecting upon their ministry
Participating with other disciplines
Interacting with each other
Relating their experience to their personal understanding of theology
All programs in Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) are conducted according to the standards of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) and are recognized for academic credit by the theological colleges associated with the Association, and by many others across Canada and the United States.
Students are encouraged to read the CASC Manual to familiarize themselves with its contents.
Supervised Pastoral Education includes the two programs of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE). This application material applies only to the CPE program.
Basic Programs and Advanced Programs:
Basic programs are open to persons who are interested and who have experience and training to benefit from such a program. Advanced programs are open to those who are members of CASC and have been authorized to proceed to Advanced standing by the Regional Admitting Committee. The process is outlined in the CASC Education Manual and must be completed before the unit begins. Provisional Supervisor-Educators must have completed the consultation process with the Certified Supervisor-Educator.
Structure of Supervised Pastoral Education:
“The SPE program shall be designated as either CPE or PCE and shall be organized in units of at least 400 hours minimum of supervised learning.”
A unit of CPE may be organized as follows:
In one period of eleven or twelve continuous weeks of full-time training;
In a period of thirty weeks involving two days of training weekly;
Or in some other form that will complete the required 400 hours in ten contiguous months.
Applications:
The Supervisor-Educator, through Acadia Divinity College, must receive applications for admission to programs at least three (3) months in advance of the commencement of the unit. (Due date is 31 January 2018.)
A program will not be held for less than three students. In that case, every effort will be made to give the students ample notice of that program’s cancellation, and students may be directed to an alternative program. In the case of more than six applicants, those who are not selected for the program may also be referred to an alternative program.
“The SPE centre shall have an admissions policy that accepts people irrespective of colour, age, sex, ethnic or religious group. (This does not preclude sponsorship of a program by a religious body.)”
“The SPE centre shall admit students on the basis of training goals of the student and the service needs of the centre.”
Students will be required to have:
A negative Canadian Police Information Centre check (CPIC) completed by their local RCMP Detachment to enter Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (NNSCF), and
Another negative CPIC completed by a Chaplain at Springhill Institution to participate in the Kairos Marathon portion of the SPE/CPE Unit.
Both CPICs are required and should be applied for ASAP.
Students are responsible for finding their own lodging for the duration of the CPE unit.
The unit will be on-site at Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility and video-conferenced for a limited number of students. Video-conferencing students in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are expected to attend NNSCF every Tuesday during the unit. Video-conferencing students from other provinces must be in an approved ministry site and have the capacity to video-conference via SKYPE BUSINESS.
Interviews will happen early February 2018; applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection as soon as possible.
Fees:
The CPE unit fee is $1,430.00.
Students are required to pay the additional fees for CASC membership/registration and CASC Liability Insurance directly to CASC. Costs and forms can be obtained on the CASC website or by calling CASC National: www.spiritualcare.ca; 1-866-442-2773 (toll-free) or 1‑289-837-2272 (local).
A deposit of $250.00 ($25.00 non-refundable) is to accompany each application payable to: Acadia Divinity College (which will be credited towards the unit fee of $1,430).
A charge of $25.00 for NSF Cheques will be applied to CASC Unit fees paid by cheque to Acadia University.
If the student intends to complete the CPE unit for academic credit, the student must register with an accredited academic institution (Acadia Divinity College, Atlantic School of Theology, Queen’s in St. John’s, etc.) and pay the additional academic credit fees as set by that academic institution.
The balance of $1,180.00 CPE unit fee (if $250.00 deposit has been received) is due the end of the first week of the Unit.
Refunds:
$25.00 of any deposit is a non-refundable processing fee.
There is no refund of deposits after 30 days prior to the beginning of a CPE Unit.
