NEWVILLE FOUNTAIN FESTIVAL MEETING

February 22, 2018 at 7PM
“THE AUTOMOBILE COMES TO NEWVILLE”
A meeting of the Newville Borough Fountain Festival Committee was held on FEBRUARY 22, 2018 at 7:00PM in the Newville Borough Office. Chairman Carolyn Kough called the meeting to order.
Members present:
Carolyn Kough, Annette Gutshall, Kathy Lloyd, Kenneth Lloyd, Joey Diehl, Elizabeth McElwain, Rausa Roscinski, Andrea Green, Angie Barlup, Kristina Keebaugh, Robert F. Over, Russell Gould, Fred Potzer.
Food Vendors:
Annette Gutshall reported she has received 24 inquiries from food vendors interested in participating in the festival. The BSSD FFA would like to sell “farm show” milk shakes. Josh Petty is interested in operating a chicken barbeque. Annette pointed to the need for seating and table space. She has tables and chairs available. Annette has created a program to sponsor a table and chairs for $10.00. The proceeds shall go to the festival. The tables and chairs will be located throughout the festival grounds. Andrea Green offered the use of Belco canopies to provide shelter from the sun. Annette concluded her reported by adding that all of the food vendor contracts have now been mailed.
Craft Vendors:
Fred Potzer reported that contracts have been mailed to all vendors as of January 29, 2018. The food, craft and community service contracts are now posted on the borough website. Craft vendor rentals will remain the same for 2018. There will be NO restrictions on the types of food, and food vendors may now sell ice tea and lemonade drink products. Soda and water will be sold exclusively by the festival committee.
Car Show:
Kenneth and Kathy Lloyd have agreed to coordinate the car show. Ken presented several trophies designed by Shippensburg Graphics. The company has generously donated a large best of show trophy. Cars and trucks will now be judged as part of the show. There will no longer be cash prizes. Trophies will be substituted instead. In addition to the “Best of Show Trophy”, there will be a Police Chief’s trophy and a Mayor’s trophy. Ken presented a flyer design. He will circulate flyers at upcoming car shows in the mid-state area, and through his car show contacts. There will be a $10 registration fee. Plans are to hold the car show once again on Parsonage Street. Dash plaques will be provided. Plans were discussed to prepare welcome bags for the car show contestants, to promote Newville and the local businesses. Members of the Newville EMS will serve as judges for the event.

Newville Automotive History:


Carolyn suggested that a display of photographs and memorabilia from Newville’s gas stations and car dealerships might be interesting. Ken suggested that perhaps some of the automotive shops in the area may wish to sponsor a car-show trophy.

Bob Over’s presentation on Friday evening will focus on the history of Newville’s many car dealerships, automotive repair shops, etc.,



FHC Breakfast:
Friendship Hose Company will provide the Saturday morning breakfast.
Baking Contest:
Lizzie informed the committee that the Big Spring Kiwanis will handle the baking contest. Entries must be baked with blue berries. Guidelines will be set by the Kiwanis Club. A news release will be prepared to announce the event. Plans are to limit entries to scones and muffins. Drop off will be Saturday, 8AM to 9AM, with judging at 9AM. Winners will be announced at the fountain, following the judging.
5 K Run:
Chuck Egger will be in charge or the race, assisted by Mr. Jumper
Street Dance:
Carolyn has contacted Scott Donato, but has not received a call back. She is confident he will provide the music for the line dance.
Duck Debry:
Fred will coordinate. We have 250 ducks to sell. Lizzie announced Big Spring Kiwanis will sponsor the event. Time: Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 12Noon.
Porch Decorating Contest:
The Newville Lions Club will discuss their participation at the next meeting. They are having difficulty in recruiting judges for the event.
Entertainment:
Friday Night – Street Dance/Tractor Twang by Scott Donato

Shippensburg Swing Band confirmed for 6:30PM at the fountain.

Saturday: Klinger McFry Band confirmed for 12Noon to 3:00PM.
Kids Alley:
Kristi Keebaugh will organize Kids Alley, assisted by Bob Over. They are interested in games for the children with prizes, inflatable rides and a petting zoo.
Electric Service:
The electrical service on Big Spring Avenue was upgraded from 100AMP to 200AMP. The committee agreed to reimburse the borough $900 for the cost of the electrical work.
Other items for consideration:
-Derby car race with help of Boy Scout Troop 174.

-Wagon rides and tours by Linda Bunning.

-Green Ridge Village Train Museum Tour.

-Peddle car contest on Friday night was discussed, which turned into a cardboard box car

contest, with entries at the various age levels. Joey Diehl and Russ Gould will take charge of

this event.

-Bob Over suggested less fire apparatus and more vintage cars, trucks and equipment for the

parade, and perhaps walking groups such as the volunteer firemen and the ladies auxiliary

of the fire company.

-Bob also suggested more carnival style events to draw folks in.
