And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law.
Galatians 2:16
What does it take to be a good Christian? How do you know what you are doing is right by God?
This Letter to the Galatians, along with the Letter to the Romans, sets clearly what it means to be Christian and what it takes to be right. “Works of the law” are those things that begin with “You must…” Anything that comes across as obligation or demand is law.
Truly, to be acceptable to God you have to do nothing! In fact, it is not up to you anyway. Jesus Christ on the cross has made us acceptable and worthy to God.
This fact makes some uneasy. Some well-meaning Christians want to put stipulations on God’s grace, that you “have to accept it,” or “you have to receive Jesus in your heart.” In truth, you don’t have to do anything.
But that does not mean a good Christian does nothing. Faith means trusting that God’s mercy and forgiveness are true for you. Faith means trusting that God loves you in particular. And so, because we believe God’s mercy and trust God’s love we respond in certain ways. Because we have faith in God’s benevolence we behave in ways that please the God we love.
Light of Christ Lutheran Church lists in our worship bulletins every Sunday some of those ways we respond to God’s love. They are behaviors that express our faith in God and that strengthen our desire to live in ways that please God.

Interim Update for May 2016
Much is happening at Light of Christ. Along with our usual programs and events, changes in staff are happening. The Children, Youth and Family Task Force has recommended the hiring of Rachel Bash as Director. More information is in this newsletter. Rachel will begin in August after she finishes her position in Jerusalem with Young Adults in Global Mission.
The Call Committee will have received profiles of pastors and will begin interviewing this month. Interviewing takes time for several reasons. Interviews have to be scheduled around candidate’s availability, and some may come from out of state. Interviews are lengthy and require much discussion by the committee following each. Interviews are followed by on-site visits, which means scheduling across several Sundays. Second interviews usually follow, as well as background checks. All this requires our patience as the committee diligently carries out their work. They will keep us informed of their progress.
We also add to our staff a new Office Assistant. Lucina Gustafson will serve LoC part-time as support to Terri Reuter, our Office Administrator. Lucina will also have responsibilities for volunteer support services.
This month LoC has a unique and unprecedented opportunity of a resident theologian on our staff. Dr. Ibrahim Bitrus is from Nigeria and knows our sister congregation, Nyanya Lutheran Church, very well. Dr. Bitrus will be teaching, leading worship, preaching and other ministries during his time with us. A list of some of his activities at LoC are also in this newsletter.
Summer is fast approaching. Graduations are this month, members return from winter homes and from colleges, preparations are taking place for youth trips and other summer events. Work goes on at LoC. This month please review your financial support of LoC. Consider scheduled on-line giving so as to keep current through the summer months. Your contributions are important for a strong beginning for our next Pastor and the next Director of CYF Ministries.
Thank you,
Pastor Chris

Light of Christ Lutheran Church,
Hello, my name is Lisa De La Cruz and my husband Mike and I lost our son during a Marine Corps routine practice exercise. Sgt. Dillon Semolina was with the United States Marine Corp on 1/14/16 during a helicopter training mission when his helicopter collided with another Marine Corps helicopter.
The reason for this email is to ask for assistance in helping future families and keeping our Dillon's name alive. Mike and I are compelled to honor Dillon's name through the "Sgt. Dillon Semolina Scholarship" that we have created in his name and honor. Quite important to Dillon, continued education and physical fitness were near and dear to his heart throughout his adolescence and on through his short adult life. We are selecting 1-2 students at Dillon's former High School in Delano, MN to receive this scholarship in his honor. We are currently at $3,100 of our $5,000 goal. Regardless of any amount you provide, it does add up and we are respectfully asking if you could assist in any amount possible to keep Dillon's dream alive and help these future students follow in his footsteps. To donate, please go to:
youcaring.com/sgtdillonsemolina
Thank you for considering.
Sincerely,
Mike and Lisa De La Cruz (Lisa Bachand-Delano Grad 1989)
In honor of our son,
Sgt. Dillon Semolina

WE ARE CHANGING THE WAY WE SCHEDULE WORSHIP ASSISTANTS! Beginning this month, we are converting the scheduling for each worship assistant group to the SignUpGenius method of scheduling. This allows volunteers the opportunity to choose the dates they participate, rather than being assigned an arbitrary date that may or may not work with their schedule. Lectors, ushers and altar guild include members who have specifically volunteered to be as such, and will receive their own invites for each respective group. New participants in those groups are always welcome! Just contact the church office if interested. For greeters, each member family is asked to serve approximately one time per year. If we have your (correct) email on file, you should receive a notification via Constant Contact with a link to follow for sign-up instructions and available dates. We will also start to include a link in the weekly e-news (if you are not signed up and would like to be, contact the church office) and reminders in the bulletins. Members who do not have email or internet access can still contact the church office to be manually signed up for an available date. If there are open slots at the time of that month’s Beacon publication, the church office will fill those spots manually. Other than the schedule printed in the monthly Beacon, paper copies of the quarterly schedule will no longer be mailed out. This will save the church time and postage, while being more efficient and accommodating for volunteers. You will automatically receive an email reminder from SignUpGenius several days prior to the date you chose. If your email address changes, or if you haven’t received an email to sign
up for your group, please contact
the church office to update your
information. Sign-up increments
will typically be for 3-month time
frames.
