Websites you might like to try
For the Introduction to Webpage Course, Autumn 2004
Ralph Cullimore – Sept 2004
If you have access to the Internet you might like to try one or more of these web pages for background information. It is by no means a complete list. If you are feeling adventurous you could try using a search engine (such as www.google.co.uk) and type in a relevant phrase such as “HTML tags” or “learning FrontPage”. Note that you should be entitled to a free half hour on the Internet at your local library every day it’s open – and they will have a fast connection!
‘Absolute Beginners Guide to Using a Computer’
One of many useful parts of the overall BBC website. This particular site takes you through the basics of using a mouse, the keyboard and the computer in general.
Address: www.bbc.co.uk/webwise then click on ‘Absolute Beginners Guide’.
Shows you how to use the Internet to find information, send email and so on. There are a number of topics to work through and each one has a quiz at the end so you can test yourself. Very informative. Same address as above (www.bbc.co.uk/webwise) then click ‘Online Course’.
As recommended by the BBC. The full address to type in is as follows:
http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimerAll.html
(Note that the capital letters in the address ARE important.)
Alternatively, type in www.bbc.co.uk/learning/adults/webguide - useful in its own right - then click on Information Technology and then A Beginner’s Guide to HTML.
This document is a little old, and American, but useful for HTML info. Starts off fairly simple and gets progressively more complex as you look through the 20 or so pages.
Again recommended by the BBC.
http://www.willcam.com/cmat/html/crossref.html
‘Gives a brief explanation of what each tag does, and the coding needed to make it happen.’
You need a basic understanding of HTML in order to make sense of this site.
Learn to type
If you fancy learning to type you can do so on this site. You do need to register with them (online) but that’s quite normal for this kind of site – and it is free. You need to be online all the time you are using the lessons though so it can be expensive in internet access costs if you’re doing it from home. Address: www.goodtyping.com
