26th Sunday of the Year C

25/26th September 2010

At the heart of being a follower of Jesus, is generosity. If we’re generous, we trust in God and not in ourselves; we give people the benefit of the doubt, and we don’t judge them; we open up our hearts to forgive people - just as Jesus said. We make room for others in our lives - hospitality is generosity in action. “Generosity” and “generation” share the same root word – bringing new life. God has generously given us life, our lives and the life of this beautiful creation, an abundance with more than enough for everyone, but are we sharing fairly?

The blessings of this world can turn us inward or outward. Like the rich man in the story we can become self-consumed, self-important, self-satisfied, self-indulgent and insensitive to others. It will not be enough to say that we didn’t notice or that we’d intended to help tomorrow, or that we mean no harm to anyone. We must develop empathy, to feel with others who are suffering and in need, to act on their behalf?

Scientists have discovered that “In these days of infectious greed, the small, brave act of co-operating with another person, of choosing trust over cynicism, generosity over selfishness, makes the brain light up with quiet joy.”

What are we prepared to give up for the Gospel? Do we try to make our own cross, or accept whatever we are given? To give up all your possessions is to make yourself vulnerable and dependant. This gospel teaching could cause all kinds of problems between families, friends and colleagues.

St Paul, in putting himself in the place of the slave, Onesimus, is encouraging the church leader, Philemon, to do what is right. But his words are equally for us today. We have the example of many such as Maximilian Kolbe who took the place of a man condemned to death in a concentration camp. We are called to lose our comfort zones, our assumed places and see each human being through the `lens’ of the gospel message of freedom and dignity. We follow Jesus that, through his Paschal Mystery he may lead us out of the world of selfishness and violence we have made, into a new heaven and new earth, where all is shaped by the generous and merciful ways of his Father.

This week we condense the story of Job into six readings: Job is a parable in the Wisdom tradition which tells how those who believe in an all-powerful God should cope with suffering. It is the unimaginable immensity of God, who is always close to his creation, which is the message of this story, revealed on Friday and Saturday through God’s enigmatic answer to Job and Job’s response.

In the Gospel (Luke 9-10) we hear about discipleship, and the work of Jesus’ followers as he sets out for Jerusalem - this is the main turning-point in Luke’s gospel.

Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 2 Tim 1:6-8, 13-14 Luke 17:5-10

The Gospel passage falls under the category that has come to be known as the “hard sayings” of Jesus. Hard to understand, hard to apply to life today. The Apostles’ request, “increase our faith,” is in response to a previous “hard saying” about how frequently we are called upon to forgive others. Curiously, Jesus seems rather unforgiving in responding to their request, or in describing the manner in which they are to serve others.

Jesus uses exaggeration to wake us up to how God is present in our lives, and how we are urged to live if God is with us. None of us is called upon to uproot trees or cast mountains into the sea. The faith we have is adequate for the task which we are called upon to do: spread the gospel by our witness. That witness is lived not for self-gratification or recognition, but out of the joy of helping the world to hear the Good News.
