May 29 and 30, 2006 14th World Computer-Chess Championship 11th Computer Olympiad Turin, Italy
In the evening of May 29, the 2006 world computer speed chess championship took place. There were 14 programs participating. They played a round robin of 13 rounds with 7 minutes per program per game. The tournament was won by Ikarus. The result surprised many participants but the victory for Ikarus was fully deserved. Round 7 The 7th round had no real surprises. Since Zappa and Junior drew, albeit in a complex and difficult way Shredder had the opportunity to take the lead. For Zappa, the result maybe a little bit disappointing. It had material disadvantage and thought that the win was easy. However, Junior had success with its active play and managed to keep the white king under continuous threat. It all ended with Junior giving perpetual check. Shredder outperformed Diep in a quiet game. Once it had advantage, it finished the game by a series of strong moves. The two runners up, Rajlich and Jonny played a draw. It was a hard fight without the major pieces. The bishops and knights were all over the board but neither site was ever in big danger. Ikarus continued its form from the blitz tournament and won against ParSOS like it did yesterday evening in the last round of the world speed chess championship. Isichess and Spike improved their position by a win over Crafty and Uragano 3d, respectively. So did Delfi4.6 and Chiron against Chaturanga and Etabeta. Below we provide the results of the 7th round in detail together with the game scores and the relevant tables.
