Is for Qatar
by Thomas
Qatar is a Middle Eastern Arab Emirate located on the Qatari Peninsula, which lies on the north eastern side of the bigger Arabian Peninsula. Since the country is rich in oil, it has the 2nd highest GDP per capita in the world. Qatar’s population has been estimated to be around 1,650,000 in 2008 with a population density of are 74 persons per kilometer squared (142 persons per mile squared). Land area wise, Qatar takes up an area of 11,437km^2 (4,416miles^2) which is around two times smaller than the state of Massachusetts. Doha is the capital of the Qatari state and the Qatari Riyal is the official currency. The one US dollar is worth around 3.64 Riyal and the currency currently has 7.2% inflation.
Fishing and pearling made the economy of Qatar before the discovery of oil in the area. Once Japan introduced the Cultured pearl, pearling declined in Qatar. The economy of Qatar was revitalized once oil was found to be in the country during the 1940’s. Currently the country is very successful and it’s citizens enjoy a high standard of living with all amenities found in other modern countries. Most income in the country is generated by oil and natural gas exports and the country contains around 15 billion barrels in gas reserves. Gas reserves in the North Field, which stretches all the way to Iran are estimated to be at 800trillion to 80trillion cubic feet, due to this, the country is known as the Saudi Arabia. Since there is no income tax, it is one of the least taxed countries in the world. (Number 2 behind Bahrain) Oil and gas are will probably hold up the Qatari economy for years to come, Qatar wants to develop a “knowledge economy”. In 2004, Qatar science & Technology Park was established to attract technology companies around the world. During the 15th Asian games in Doha, Sports City was established, and area containing: Aspine Sport Academy, Aquatic center, exhibition centers and many other buildings having relation to sports. Due to the success of the Asian Games in Doha, the city has entered bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in 2007. Qatar also has plans to build “entertainment” city. The currently country strives to become a role model in the region for social and economic success.
The Qatari state lies 100 miles north into the Persian Gulf in relation to Saudi Arabia. Most of the country is low, barren plain covered with sand. As the highest point in Qatar, Qurayn Abu al Bawl is 103 meters (340ft) above sea level. Oil deposits in Qatar can be found in Jebel Dukan while Natural gas exports can be found Northwest of the country.
Islam is the most common religion in Qatar with over 77.5% of Qatari’s practicing it. Sunni Muslims make up 98% of the Muslims found in the country. Non-citizens that come from South & South East Asia mostly for temporary work are usually Muslim, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, or Baha’is. The hindu population in Qatar is predominantly Indian and Buddhists are usually from South, Southeast, and East Asia.

The Boston Red Sox
A team that continuously tries its hardest to be the best.
They all run on the field and take their positions.
The swift movement of the players completes each play.
The luscious smell of the fresh Fenway franks fills the air.

Right Fielder JD Drew
JD Drew is an outstanding right fielder for the Boston Red Sox. He was born in Valdosta, GA on November 20th in the year 1975. He didn’t start playing the game of baseball until he was 13 years old. Soon he became a great baseball player and went Florida State and played baseball. After many great successful years there, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in their first round pick. Drew was also drafted with the St. Louis Cardinals, 1st round, 5th pick and was signed with them on July 3rd 1998. The year before though, in 1997, it seamed to be a pretty good year for him. He won the golden spikes award and he was named collegiate baseball player of the year, sporting news player of the year, and ACC player of the year.
Drew spent his first 6 years on the Cardinals, the next year on the Braves, and the next 2 years after that on the Dodgers. But he has spent these past 3 years on the Red Sox playing right field, so he has a total of 11 years of experience. Although he has been doing great on the Red Sox, he has been said to have his best year in 2003 on the Atlanta Braves even though he was signed with the Dodgers the next year. He hit 31 home runs that year and had 96 RBI’s. But now at age 33 Drew gets paid 14 million dollars a year on the Boston Red Sox. He has a .979 fielding percentage and a .248 batting average. The 2009 year so far for Drew has been going good with 149 at bats, 22 RBI’s, and 7 home runs. JD Drew is an amazing baseball player and he continues to have a great year, year after year on the Boston Red Sox and he hopefully will for years to come.
