by Tony is for Jerry West. Jerry was born in Cheylan, West Virgina on May 28th 1938. He is considered one of the best shooters to ever play basketball. He was a shooting guard point guard hybrid who was highly successful. Jerry played 14 years in the NBA all with the Los Angeles Lakers making an outstanding number of 14 all-star teams, 4 all NBA first team defensive team and winning a world Championship in 1972. He is nicknamed, “Mr. Clutch” for his skills coming down the stretch. Jerry was voted one of the 50 greatest players in the NBA. This is quite an achievement because there have been many amazing players who have been left off that list and this states that many people think Jerry was a better player than those people.

Jerry has many other achievements too. He played in 9 NBA finals (he would have won more but he was consistently going up against the great Bill Russell and the Celtics. He is the only player to ever win an NBA finals MVP and have his team lose the Finals. This is a great achievement because you have to be a lot better than everybody on the opposing team to get that award and lose the finals. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Massachusetts in the year 1980. Jerry West also holds the record for Points per game in a playoff series. He average 46.3 in a PLAYOFF series. Talk about MR. Clutch in the playoffs, in the playoffs is normally when there are less points because of the stifling defense and for Jerry to average 46.3 is amazing.

After his lengthy and lustrous career with the Lakers Jerry became the coach of the team he played with for his whole career. In each of the three seasons, Jerry coached the Lakers making the playoffs in each of the three seasons. He became the general in the 1982-83 season and is still the GM currently. The Lakers have prospered under Jerry and have won 7 championships and are currently in the Finals this year up 3-1 against the Orlando magic.

As a child, Jerry was born into a poor household in Cheylan. He would ignore many possible obstacles like the mud on where he would play, or a uneven shack on which he would put his hoop. After getting benched in his freshmen season at East Bank High School in 1952 Jerry grew to 6 foot and became better conditioned and more defensive minded. His coached played him that season and Jerry was named an all-state player for the rest of his 3 seasons and an All-American as a senior and became the first player to score over 900 points.

Jerry attended West Virginia University in the 1956-57 season. After his four years there he set 12 school records. The major ones include 2,309 points and 1,240 rebounds. Jerry never won a National Championship but was still extremely successful. He also set many records at WVU. He was a 2 time All-American and set the record for most points in 5 games of an NCAA tournament with 160 points. Because of all of his achievements at WVU he was selected as a co-captain of the 1960 USA Olympic national team along with the Big O (Oscar Robertson).

 Walter Elias Disney

By Brad

Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois 1901. He was raised in Missouri on a farm. His family lived in poverty, and they were all failures (except for him). So this means that his family was poor. When Walter misbehaved, he was beaten along with his 3 brothers and sister.

Later in his life when he was 19 to be exact, he started making cartoons for commercial ads. Then, when he was 27 he was inspired to make Mickey Mouse. This happened because there were mice on his desk in his studios. He kept them and made them his pets. In the time frame of 10 years, he decided he was going to make the first full-length animation film. He had hired the best animation drawers to help him make this. 4 years later he finished Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. After that, he decided to make Bambi, Cinderella, and 101 Dalmatians. There were a lot more than just those. After this, Walt had 21 full-length films. He had 423 short subjects. There was also 330 hours of Mickey Mouse club on T.V. Obviously his studios are still making more movies. He won 7 Emmy awards. He won 48 Academy Awards.

In 1957, Walt decided he is going to make Disney Land which is in California. This I think was one of his best ideas, considering it is still around today. By 1966, the year he died, 6.7 million people had already gone to visit it. He died on December 15, 1966 of lung cancer.

Many people believe that Walt Disney was frozen and buried under one of his parks. However this is not true. He was actually cremated when he died. It was all a rumor, and that was just one thing that I wanted to make clear!

Xerox

Xerox is actually not a word that means to copy, but a brand name. Xerox is often mistaken as an actual verb, like: “go xerox [actually Xerox] this worksheet.” This is very similar to the case where Kleenex is actually a brand name, while the right term would be tissue. Another often misconception is for a word is Band-Aid, while the actual word for that would be adhesive bandage. The Xerox Corporation is known for making and selling photocopiers, printers, printing presses, etc., although it also sells computers and TVs. The corporation was founded in 1906 by Chester Carlson and Joseph C. Wilson as the Haloid Company. In 1958, they chanced their name to Haloid Xerox, and then to just Xerox in 1961. Xerox won the Peabody Award in 1965 for Television Contribution to International Understanding.

Zebra
Zipping around corners, avoiding predators
Energetic, black and white creatures
Bright, young, friendly animals
Racing through deserts, forests, and plains
Always graceful, leaping through the air with each step
All about the Zebra :

Most Zebras live in savannahs, but they can also be found in treeless grasslands, and open woodlands. Zebras are long legged, fast, and graceful animals. Zebras have an interesting way of behaving. To groom themselves they nip at each others head, back, and neck.  Their external coat does wonders! It is said that it can take up to 70% of heat radiation. And the reason why they have the stripes is because it helps them withstand solar radiation. They mostly travel in the thousands in the northern part of Kenya. This way, in case a predator comes along, they are intimidated by the thousands of zebras. The way that they travel in also quite unique, the dominant mare leads, with the others following in a line then the foals, and lastly the lowest ranking mare.  Also when they travel, they do so at the pace of the old and weak so they can keep up. With other pack animals, if you can’t keep up, then you can’t be in that pack.

Zebra’s have quite a few predators and need to travel in packs; lions, hyenas, hunting dogs, leopards, and cheetahs all prey on the zebra. When the zebra is feeling attacked, they form a circle, and if the attack continues then they are ready to bite/strike when needed. Also if another member is injured then the whole pack forms a circle around them to protect it.

After the first couple of days after birth the mother of the foal has everyone keep away from the new born, even family members, so her young can learn to recognize her by sight, smell, and voice. If you’re a male foal, then you will create a tight bond with your father, and after 1-4 years, you will leave your pack to join an all male pack. This way they become stronger and more ready to lead their very own pack when they return.

Their diet is very limited. They mostly just graze, but when the season is dry they eat the dry grass that comes with it. They drink out of any water holes they find.
