Most heroes are people like you. But what makes them heroes? They find special courage when they need it. They are brave enough to help in an emergency while others may stand by. A hero sees what needs to be done and does it.

Sometimes heroes are rewarded for their brave acts. One such reward is the Carnegie Medal. It is given to people who act bravely and face danger to save the lives of others.

The medal was named after Andrew Carnegie. In 1886, Carnegie heard about a young man by the name of William Hunter who lost his life trying to save two other boys from drowning. Carnegie became a very rich businessman and set aside money to honor heroes like William. Sometimes these heroes are in need or are hurt. If so, they receive money as well as the Carnegie Medal.

Over 6,000 people have received the Carnegie Medal. Some have saved people from drowning or from burning buildings. 三、閱讀測驗:

What can you do if you ‘lose’ the data from your disks? To find an expert, who would recover the lost information for you, is probably the easiest solution. Jack Olson is one of these experts. Jack and a few of his friends set up a company called “Jack’s Disk Doctor Service” in 1984. They work from home and give all the money they earn to charity. The fees are always the same, no matter how precious the data on the disk is. Some people, however, are so grateful that they send extra money to Jack or to the charities his company supports. One oil company offered him $2000 for his help and an architect even sent him a blank check.

It would be difficult to put a value on the things rescued by the Disk Doctor. There have been disks containing medical research, television scripts, manuscripts of whole books, a lawyer’s papers for a court case, and even Margaret Thatcher’s travel plan for a visit to eastern Europe. For this last case, Jack had to go in person to Thatcher's office ‘for security reasons’!

Disks are usually sent to the Disk Doctor by post, but sometimes people are in such a hurry that they cannot wait for the mail to come. For example, some radio scripts had to be rushed by taxi to Jack’s house because they were needed for broadcasting the next day. When the material has been recovered, the disk is returned to the sender with a diagnosis and a prescription for avoiding the problem in the future. One grateful client, an author, put a “thank you” to Jack in the front of his book. “Jack saved me from a heart attack,” he wrote. “But,” says Jack, “most people don’t take any notice of the doctor’s advice!”

11. What does the word rescued in the second paragraph mean?

(A) recovered (B) prescribed (C) examined (D) discovered

(A) The architect did not have any money (B) The architect did it for security reasons

(C) The architect always followed the doctor's advice

13. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

(A) Jack’s Disk Doctor Service has only one standard fee.

(B) Jack and his company have made a fortune from their service.

(C) Margaret Thatcher is a very important person.

(D) Jack’s clients are from all walks of life.

14. From the statement “But … most people don’t take any notice of the doctor's advice!” we can infer that .

(A) most people don’t take medicine regularly

(B) many of Jack’s patients would probably get sick again

(C) many of Jack’s clients have sought for his help more than once

(D) most people don’t read the instruction when using a computer

Printing is one of the most important means of communication. Without it you would not now be reading this passage. Even the development of radio and television has not diminished the importance of printing.

The first printing was done from wood blocks one letter at a time by hand. This was a slow process, requiring much skill and patience, and every page of every book had to be cut separately.

A great step forward was the use of movable type. The Chinese discovered this in the 11th century, but it was not known in Europe until about 1440. In this method of printing, individual letters were made from separate pieces of metal. If these letters were linked over and pressed on to paper, they would print the words. When the printing was finished, the letters could be taken apart and rearranged to print something else.

One of the first European books to be printed in movable type was Johannes Gutenberg's 42-line Bible. The first book to be printed likewise in English was about the history of Troy. It was printed in Flanders in 1474 by an Englishman, William Caxton. In 1476 he returned to England and established a printing press at Westminster. Altogether he printed nearly 80 books, many being his own translations from the French.

In the hope of raising their children to be independent, self-sufficient, global-minded citizens, Craig and Lauren Bach did something very different. 14 Since the sailing began in November 2007 they have learned and changed much more than they ever imagined. With this journey, they’ve become increasingly adept at handling their ketch in open water. 15 Other changes have taken place, too, as the family of six has adapted to living together in tight quarters. The kids have learned to give and take, and small annoyances have disappeared. 16 The few square feet of living space on the boat help them to readjust their ideas about what they have to have. There is increasing scientific evidence that large cars cause more highway accidents than small cars. In the news recently was the story of a woman who died of a heart attack while driving her station wagon. The car was moving so fast that it went through the highway-dividing fence, resulting in a collision in which five people died. Those unnecessary deaths are attributable in part to the woman's choice of a large automobile. A lighter and smaller car probably wouldn't have gone through the fence, its remaining energy would have been much less, and this would have reduced the chances of serious injury or death. Because of its small size, it might have missed the other car completely. The present design of the oversized automobile is largely responsible not only for increasing death toll on the highways but also for the rapid depletion of our resources of petroleum, for the pollution of our environment, and for the congestion and inconvenience of our cities.
11. For the five highway deaths, the author blames ____________.

(A) a large heavy station wagon (B) the lack of more smaller vehicles

(C) the woman's ill-timed heart attack (D) a weak highway-dividing fence
12. What is the author's main point in the passage above?

(A) Large cars should be banned by the government.

(B) Large cars are less safe and less economical than small cars.

(C) Large cars are safer for the occupants than large cars.

(D) A woman's heart attack caused the death of five people.
13. The author's statement about the highway fence's ability to retain a smaller and lighter car
