1 May Augie March - After a half decade hiatus, one of the nation's most respected indie-rock acts returns to Tanks, with an expanded line-up and new album, Haven's Dumb. Regularly touted as one of Australia's 'greatest' or 'finest' bands; with albums and songs on the 'best ever' lists - their music is impossible to categorize they have traditional elements at times, then get wildly avant garde at others. They are that rarest of bands that have enjoyed both critical and commercial success - at times their songs have been on almost every radio format in the country - with gold and platinum albums to their credit, yet they remain perennial outsiders. In 2009, after a period of commercial success, the band - for a variety of reasons - ceased enjoying being Augie March, and decided to take an indefinite break. That break ended up lasting five years. Now they're back with an exciting new album that's garnering great reviews, and that will be cherished by those who have kept faith with this rare outfit. Tanks Arts Centre, 46 Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, 7.30pm, This performance will be a mixture of seating and standing. Seating cannot be reserved and is available on a first in basis. 2 May Frackman – screening in Malanda - 14:30hrs Majestic Theatre, 1-3 Eacham Pl, Malanda. $10 at door or purchase online at www.tugg.com/events/15243 Dayne Pratzky loved the quiet life on his rural block in central Queensland. Then the coal seam gas company arrived, and that changed everything. Legally he couldn’t stop them mining his land, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t fight. And so began a David and Goliath battle against a $200 Billion industry. Along the way he found love, tragedy and triumph. Frackman is like no other Australian film. It aims to spark a broad national conversation about the risks of our headlong rush into massive coal seam gas development. Five years in the making, it not only entertains and engages, it also gives audiences the tools to get involved in what is becoming the largest social movement our nation has seen in decades. It’s a deeply political film, but not the old style that is so badly failing us. This is the New Politics, bringing together old and young, city and country, conservative and progressive in a shared effort to prevent an environmental catastrophe. Can we imagine any other issue that would bring together the likes of Alan Jones and Bob Brown? See it and find out why.

In Australia, an economically privileged society with robust social and health sectors, disadvantage, discrimination and exclusion are pervasive across remote Indigenous Australia and compounded for those with mental health and other disabilities. Two Aboriginal Australians, politician Allison Anderson and psychiatrist Marshall Watson, will reflect on the salience of those experiences and lessons to the political, service and social landscape of remote Indigenous Australia. 14 – 15 May Squaring the Wheel combines circus, clown, strange mechanisms and contraptions, puppetry, magic and music into an unusual, thingamabobbish theatre extravaganza. A flying broom, two ugly screaming babies, 17 balls, 34 meters of bent steel, 483 welded points and 15 marching eggs are just the tip of the iceberg of unexpected, transformed wacky materials and objects. Unpredictable, funny, touching, highly visual and occasionally out of control, it is a clever theatre adventure for the whole family in thinking out of the box. Topsy-turvy ways to look at things, teamed with imagination, transform a pile of junk into a resourceful repository of gadgets and circus props, into life and friendship supporting odds and ends …all done in an hilarious and ultimately very human way of complicating simple things. 15 May Securing the Good Life: Developing Safeguards for Vulnerable People Presented by Michael Kendrick Cairns Cairns Friday May 15, 2015 – Cairns

The aim of National Families Week 2015 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society. The 2015 theme is 'Stronger Families, Stronger Communities'. This year's theme highlights the important role families play as the central building block of our communities and that community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing. National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life. Let’s take the time to reflect on the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children especially as they grow, and in supporting community elders. National Families Week coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May. This day is observed by the United Nations to mark the importance that the international community places on families as the most fundamental units of society, as well as to show concern about their situation in many parts of the world. 18 May The last decade could rightfully be called the ‘decade of the brain’ as advances in medical and neuroscience have deepened our understanding of brain development and cognitive functioning, more than any other period before. Much of the public discussion has related to new knowledge of infant’s brains, however, just as many amazing are discoveries have been made relating to brain development and functioning from childhood right through to late adolescence. These findings often contradict many of the long-held practices that helping professionals, teachers and parents have viewed as best practice. The result is that there is now a large gap between how people ‘think’ the developing brain functions and what neuroscience research has actually shown to be the case. An understanding of this knowledge and its practical application will help to guide your practice to better meet the behavioural, developmental and educational needs of the children, adolescents and families you work with. You will learn:
How a child’s brain works and matures including the different parts of the brain such as the frontal cortex, the influence of plasticity, and the reptilian brain.
What the research has shown about the ideal physical, emotional, educational and social conditions under which the developing brain functions at its best.
What are the implications of this knowledge for professional practice and parenting with children and adolescents? What approaches and interventions work best from a neuroscience perspective and how to turn an outburst, argument or fear into a chance to integrate a child’s brain and foster vital social and emotional development.
From a neuroscience perspective, what are the common pitfalls parents, teachers, and helping professionals make when working with young people and which of our current approaches have been shown to be less helpful then we thought.
Practice considerations when working with children and adolescents who have experienced early life trauma which may have impacted upon their early brain development.
This is an invaluable workshop for professionals working with children, young people and families looking to reinvigorate their practice and enhance their understanding of clients' needs. Full of “aha!” moments, this workshop focuses on different discoveries in neuroscience, explains them in plain English and provides guidance on how to put this knowledge to practical use in the classroom, therapy room and home, with recommendations backed by evidence from neuroscience for optimum social and emotional well-being. Nathan’s vast knowledge in this area, combined with his interactive and engaging teaching style and thoughtful use of case study material has made him one of Compass’s most requested speakers. Nathan Mikaere Wallis is an Educational Psychologist with a practice background in teaching, counselling and child therapy. He is a trustee for the Brainwave Trust and is a sought after trainer in the area of neuroscience research and its implications for practice. He also runs a successful consultancy specializing in child development and parenting. 19 May Kinship: Exploring a trauma informed model of practice - Over the past few years the Out of Home Care landscape has shifted from a focus on Foster Care to a majority of children being cared for by kinship carers. This shift in focus has challenged professionals in the care system to include and incorporate the complex dynamics of kinship families into their models of care. ◾Revise and extend their knowledge of assessment models and frameworks relating to complex families.
◾Engage in strategies and activities that build a repertoire for creative child centred trauma informed practice

29 May Lateral violence workshop, Cairns - Lateral violence is when the oppressed become the oppressors, and they use destructive behaviours to exert their powers over others by engaging in behaviours such as gossiping, back-stabbing and creating situations which are emotionally and physically destructive to others. The Lateral Violence workshop is an in depth workshop exploring the behaviours related to lateral violence and how these behaviours impacts of individuals, families, communities and organisations. The Lateral Violence Workshop will assist Workers and Organisations to better understand the dynamics which effect many of our clients, and will ultimately improve service delivery and provision. 31 May Cairns Eco-Fiesta (formerly Sustainable Living Expo) - Cruise Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland. We have been busily planning for the 2015 Sustainable Living Expo and have some exciting news to share! Council has partnered with James Cook University to align the 2015 Expo with the JCU Sustainability Symposium – that is, to have two complementary events in the same week. Townsville Council is following suit, partnering with their JCU campus to align their Council’s annual environmental festival with the JCU symposium, which is run concurrently at both campuses. The aim of these partnerships is to create a platform for a regional ‘Eco-Week’, where Councils, JCU, schools, TAFE, community / environment groups, businesses and individual community members hold their own new or existing event / activity during Eco-Week (29 May to 7 June) to benefit from cross promotion and wider media exposure. The Sustainable Living Expo will now be called ‘Eco-Fiesta’ to align with the Townsville event and better reflect the event message of – planet, people, prosperity. The new name is also a nod to CAFNEC’s Enviro-Fiesta from yester-year. The Cairns Eco-Fiesta will be held on Sunday 31 May 2015 at the Cruise Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland – this venue combines the best of both worlds – indoor exhibition space for businesses and outdoor ‘festival’ space where event attendees can enjoy a day out in a relaxed atmosphere. We believe this collaborative approach to align sustainability events across the region will create many synergies, including widening the appeal of individual events. We are writing to highlight the ‘Eco-week’ concept and to invite you to think about how your organisation might like to participate in this collaborative model by holding your own event during Eco-Week. So if you like the idea, please get in touch so we know what your thoughts are and can plan accordingly. The green edge of the business community is also welcome to participate either by having a stall at the Eco-Fiesta, using the week as a platform to promote their green credentials, fundraise for an eco-cause or anything else that makes a positive contribution to the week. We are still in the early planning stages and welcome any input to make Eco-Week and the Eco-Fiesta the premier sustainability event in regional Australia. Please contact one of the team at any time. It’s going to be a big job to bring it all together but we’re really positive about where this can go. Stay tuned for more updates early in the New Year.
