TOPIC: MAINTENANCE OF COMPUTER I; GENERAL CLEANING.
Specific Objectives: By the end of this lesson the students should be able to;
1. Explain Computer Maintenance.
2. Explain physical maintenance.

Computer Maintenance
Computers like any other electronic or mechanical device is bound to malfunction once in a while. The malfunctioning can be drastically reduced if some simple and steps are followed. The computer user need not to call a computer technician or an IT professional for some minor thing, he can do it himself to keep the machine running. Maintaining your computer properly can help prevent major problems and should be incorporated as part of a regular schedule.
Computer maintenance can be broken down into two main areas. Physical and software based maintenance.
Physical maintenance: involves cleaning the various internal and external components such as monitor, mouse, printer, system unit, scanners etc.
Software maintenance: is the regular virus scanning, spyware/malware scanning and backing up of critical data in the computer.
SOLUTION
In doing general cleaning, you must not use commercial or household cleaners. Use basic mild solution which is warm water and detergent mixed into a mild solution. This basic solution is good for removing finger prints on cathode ray tube LCD monitor.
SOLUTIONS
Method: Soak a soft cloth in a bucket of the cleaning solution and wring out so it won’t drip. Gently rub over the area to be cleaned. Rinse and repeat it until the dirt is removed.

Cleaning each computer devices.
Computer: Before embarking on the cleaning unplug the computer from the power source. While you are cleaning your computer visually check external cable connections, untangle the mouse lead and keyboard leads.
Monitor: Dust your monitor and the table top. Use the mild solution to clean the monitor
SCANNER: Dust and wipe down the exterior of the scanner. Clean glass with the mild solution as earlier explained. Avoid the use of newspaper or any other paper to clean the glass. Remember one scratch in the glass will make everything you scan after that will have a mark on it.
Keyboard: You can use vacuum cleaner to clean your keyboard. Turn it upside down, clean it and gently shake out dirt.
Mouse: Ball mice need the axles cleaned. Optical mice just need to be wiped down with a damp cloth. Wireless mice need to have their battery compartments checked to see if the batteries are leaking.
Printers: The inkjet and the laser printers are the most commonly used printers
