Appendix 2 – User guide

Once the application has been successfully installed, start the Android launcher application by touching its icon at the bottom of the Home screen (shown circled in the diagram below). The launcher screen will display icons for all the applications installed on the device. The user can start the HGuide application by touching its icon (as shown below). To place the HGuide icon on your home screen, touch and hold the icon for a few seconds and then drag it on to the home screen.

Once the application has started, the initial opening screen is displayed. From here the user can select the language they wish to use (from the icon at the bottom left), change the selected guidebook (by touching the top of the screen) and start that guidebook by touching the arrow at the bottom right.

If you press the MENU button while viewing this screen, the following options will be displayed:

  • Settings: This option will display the application settings (described later in this document).

  • Help: This will display the standard help file for the application.

Once a guidebook has been selected the next screen shows the list of options available (this will vary from guidebook to guidebook).

Language selection

In the “Old Edinburgh” guidebook, pressing the "Historical Maps" item on the list will display a map of Edinburgh from 1765. A small icon of a person will be overlaid at the user's current position on the map (if the “Display Location” option is enabled in the settings menu).

There are three georeferenced maps of Edinburgh stored in the device, one from 1765, one from 1647 and a modern map. Touching the map title at the top of the screen will allow you to cycle through the maps. If the title of the map is underlined, then the application has located your position and you should be able to see a person icon overlaid on the map (if you are standing within the area of the map).

Double tap the screen to zoom into a map or single tap the screen to display the zoom in/out controls at the bottom of the screen. To scroll around the maps, press and move your finger around the screen. If the centre D-pad button is pressed on your device (if it supports it), then the application will toggle a modern map with the most recently viewed historic map. To move the map to your current location, press the down button on the D-pad

Pin markers may be displayed on the maps. Each one indicates a place of interest which, if pressed, will display the pages for that place. These pin Markers can be hidden using a menu option if you wish to see the maps unobscured.

A compass will be displayed at the top right hand corner of the display if the “Enable compass” option is on in the settings menu. The red side of the dial indicates north

If the MENU button is pressed while viewing a map, the following options are displayed:

  • Legend: This option will display the Legend associated with the current map. A legend gives the name of the streets written as numbers on the historic maps.

  • Show/Hide Pins: Selecting this option will toggle the visibility of the pins on the map. This setting will be remembered between sessions.

  • Map Info: Selecting this option will display the history of the selected map typically giving a brief description of the map and when it was published. It will also give the latitude and longitude of the current centre of the map (where the cross hair is) and also your location (if known).

  • Help: This will display the standard help file for the application.

Once has chapter or site has been selected, a series of pages will be displayed typically starting with an image of the site. The user can swipe horizontally to go between pages and swipe vertically to scroll up and down text.

Several buttons can appear at the top of a page:

  • Map button: This button will display the location of the current site on a historic map.

  • Audio Button: This button will play any audio files associated with the current page. If the "Use Text to Speech" option is enabled in the application, then the text displayed on the page will be converted into audio for the user to listen to.

  • Video button: This button will be displayed if the page has a video clip associated with it. If pressed, the video will be played full screen.

  • Sign Language button: This button is displayed if the page has a sign language video clip associated with it. If pressed, the sign language video will be played full screen.

As shown below, the user also has the option of seeing all the places of interest in the current guidebook in one list rather than just selecting a place from a pin marker on a map. The application can also allow you to and pan around and zoom into and out of engravings and images from the “Engravings” menu option.

Places of Interest

Engravings

Map Flyover

The map flyover option will scroll the map to show you different places and describe in a text box interesting events that occurred there in history.

The “The book of Old Edinburgh” option will display the “The Book of Old Edinburgh” written by John Dunlop and Alison Dunlop in 1896. To view this book, a pdf viewer such as “Adobe reader” (which can be downloaded for free from the Android market place) is required. When viewing this book it is recommended that a landscape mode is used to see the text in more detail (especially when a smaller device is being used).
To access the settings menu for the application, press the “MENU” button on the device from the initial front screen and select the “Settings” option. The following series of options will appear:

Display Location

(Display current Location on Map)

This option will attempt to get the user’s current location using GPS and place an icon of the person at the position they are at on the current map*.

Show Title Bar

(Show title bar in map)

If this option is enabled, the standard Android title bar will be displayed at the top of the map page (showing the current time, GPS activity and any notifications). If this option is disabled, the map will cover the full screen.

Show Compass

(Show compass in map)

If this option is enabled, a compass is placed at the top right hand corner of the screen. The red part of the dial indicates north. This option requires the “Display Location” option enabled.

Reset Help Hints

(Show the first time help hints)

If this option is selected, help hints will be displayed on many of the screens when they are next displayed. Once a particular help hint has been displayed, it is not be shown again unless this option is once more selected. A help hint displays instructions to the user related to the particular screen they are on.

Disable Screen Timeout

(Disable screen timeout when viewing map)

If this option is selected, then when the user is viewing the map page, the screen will not dim/power save.

High Contrast Text

(Save power and increase visibility of the text)

If this option is selected, the guidebook pages will display white text on top of a black background. This will both save battery power and may make the text easier to read for people with poor eyesight.

Use Text To Speech

(Use speech synthesis for audio playback)

If this option is selected, the text in the guidebook pages will be read out using Android’s Text to speech capability. If this option is selected and the Android Text To Speech resource files are not installed on the device, the application will attempt to fetch and install them from the Android marketplace. The resource files are free to download.

Text Size

Change the text (font) size

This option allows the user to select the font size to be used in the guidebook pages.

Enable Weather Check

(Modify content based on weather (data connection required))

If this option is selected, then the device will attempt to retrieve the weather conditions for the location that the current guidebook pertains to. The application will only do this if a data (Wi-Fi or GPRS) connection is available. Currently, only the introduction page in the “Old Edinburgh” guidebook will change its content based on the weather conditions. The message “Weather check completed” will be displayed briefly if the weather information is retrieved successfully and is displayed at the bottom of the Help page.

Notes: *To conserve battery power, the application will only attempt to locate the user’s position when the user is in a map page. The user’s position on the map is programmed to update every 60 seconds although in practise the map may take longer due to power consumption optimisations in devices.

To access the help screen for the application, press the “MENU” button on the device from any screen in the application and then select the “Help” option. To adjust the audio volume of your device, please consult the user manual for your particular device.
The map page will automatically change between portrait and landscape mode as the device is rotated. To avoid this you can switch the “Orientation” option off in the Android operating system under “Settings”, “Sound & display”. This will affect all applications on the device.
In common with all other Android applications, if the device is not used for a certain amount of time, the device will dim and subsequently power-down the display. If this occurs, the user can press a button and then swipe the screen to return to the running application.
This application does not store or transmit any data on where the user is or has been.

Appendix 3 – Installation guide

At the moment, the application is not on the Android marketplace. Instead, a reduced version of the application (which only has a single historic map and no engravings) is available. To install this application download the APK and zipped data file from the following locations:

APK file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4365763/HGuide.apk

Zip Data file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4365763/HGuide.zip

The zip data file should be uncompressed to an SD card ensuring that the “HGuide” directory is at the root of the SD card directory (i.e. /sdcard/HGuide).

Before attempting a manual installation of apps using the .apk files, you must first allow your phone to install from “Unknown Sources” (i.e. non-Market apps). To do this, navigate to “Menu”, “Settings”, “Applications” and check the box marked “Unknown Sources“.

You can use the “adb” command (available in the Android software development kit running on the Eclipse development environment) to install the application onto a device or emulator. Use the following command to achieve this:

adb install

Additional information on how this can be done is available from the following link: http://developer.Android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html#move

1 In this document the word “view” and “component” are used interchangeably.
