This land was located on both sides of Jones' Fork. (Bedford County, Virginia, Bk 1, p334). Michael later conveyed this land to Matthias.

27 Apr 1761: deed from Michael Yoakum to Mathias Yoakum, both of Bedford County, Virginia, for 5 pounds 100A on both sides of Jones Fork (Bedford County, Virginia, Bk 1 p402).

1774: Michael Yoakum of Bedford County, in which now lie the Peaks of Otter, was granted an injunction against proceedings against him.

1774: Michael was ordered to pay his wife the sum of three pounds a month for her subsistence (they were probably living apart at this time).

ca 1774: Michael asked the court that he be held secure in the sum of 200 pounds each for the said Michael's good behavior “to the day from this time to be...” What was the cause of Michael's misbehavior is not stated (Court Order Bk6 p214).

ca 1775: in the case of Yocum vs. Yocum, upon the complaint of the plaintiff (his wife) by her attorney “it is ordered that an allowance of six pounds per month be paid her (his wife) from this time until this cause can be heard in equity.” (Court Order Bk 6 p245).

27 Feb 1775: Charles and Elizabeth McGlothlin of Bedford County conveyed to Michael Yocum of the same county for the sum of 55 shillings a certain parcel of land consister of 31 acres, lyin go the waters of the Little Otter with all houses, buildings, orchards, woods, wayes, waters, Profits, Commodities, Hereditaments and Appurtenances thereto belonging, which suggests that either lands weren't very valuable at the time or that McGlothlin and Michael were close friends or relatives. This transfer also suggests that Michael Yoakum was consolidating his laded properties on the Otter River. (Bedford County, Virginia, Bk 5 p282).

no date: moved to Botetourt County, west of Bedford County, Virginia.

29 Sept 1779: deed from Michel Yocam of Botetourt County, Virginia, to Lawrence McGuire of Bedford County 500 pounds Bedford County, Virginia 80A on the north branch of the Otter River, this land being a part of the land Matthias Yocam purchased from the Randolph Tract (Bedford County, Virginia, Bk 6 p379) (this is part of the 180 acre farm which was passed back and forth between Matthias and Michael Yoakum earlier).

no date: moved to Green County, North Carolina.

1784/85: this suit against Michael Yoakum by his wife was dismissed.

5 Oct 1785: deed from Michael Yoakum to Thomas Wood of Bedford County, Virginia, 500 pounds for 100A on both sides of Stoney Creek. Appended to the deed is this statement: “I the within said Michael Yocoum stand between the said within mentioned Thomas Wood and my wife to keep him indemnified of my wife that is absconded of his dowry, hearto I set my hand and seal this 5th day of October 1785.” From this it appears that Michael and his wife haven't been divorced and that his wife may still have dower right in his property against which he insures Thomas Wood, the purchaser of the land.

“Michael was among the petitioners to promote religion and virtue amongst the other Presbyterian Churches in this part of the colony.” (Virginia Magazine of History, vol. 12 p149). Page 419 of the same magazine and volume, states, “Ann Boyles was a member of the Presbyterian Church.”

Annals of Bath County, Virginia, 1917, pp83-84:

“The Pontiac War suddenly burst out in June 1763. It had been planned with great secrecy by the `red men' and was designed as a simultaneous attack along the whole western frontier. To Cornstalk, a Shawnee chieftain of unusual ability, was assigned the task of dealing a heavy blow on the Greenbrier and the settlement to the southeast. With a strong band he fell upon the unsuspecting Greenbrier settlements and in a day or two had blotted them out. One Conrad Yoakum outdistanced the Indians in their progress to Jackson's River and gave warning to the people around Fort Mann. The settler could hardly credit the report, yet they gathered into the block house and sent a courier to Fort Young, 10 miles down the river. Captain Moffat Phillips set out with 60 men to their relief. The scouts kept cautiously along the river bank the entire distance. But when the main body reached the horseshoe peninsula immediately below the fort they thought to save time by marching across the creek. As a result of their imprudence they fell into an ambuscade and lost 15 of their number, the survivors retreating.”

John Yocom age 87, entered the service May 1780 when a resident of Augusta County, Virginia under Gen. Clark, Col. Morgan, Major William Lowder and under Capt. George Jackson, 6 months.

He states he marched by land from Augusta County, Virginia to Morgantown and then too water to Ft. Pitt (Pittsburgh). From there down the Ohio River to Louisville, Kentucky, landing on 25 Aug. After six months he served a tour of two months in Kentucky on the Ohio River as a private guarding the Frontier settlements, under Rowland Thompson.

He was not able to appear in court because of age.
From John Yocom's pension file:

“I, William Yocum, a resident of Clay County and State of Indiana do hereby certify that I do well recollect of meeting John Yocum about the time by him above stated [this refers to the later `tour' on the Ohio], in the Wilderness part of Kentucky I think on Richland Creek he was then on foot and had a gun and I think a knapsack on his back. my father was there on his way to Kentucky, they halted and talked together. I then understood by their conversation that the above John Yocom had with my father that he had then been out on a campaign in Kentucky at Louisville under General Clark. he then stated he was on his way to the state of Virginia and I well recollect that in a few years after that the said John Yocum moved on to Kentucky. he lived on my father's plantation and continued to live in that neighborhood for several years during which time I frequently heard him and my father conversing together respecting their services in the Revolutionary War. I still understood by him of having served the Six months Tour above named by him and also heard him state that he served two months Tour on the Ohio River In Kentucky and frequently heard him and my father talking about their ages. I think he had no record of his age but from the best account he could get he was some older than my father, perhaps two or three years, my father was born in the year 1750 agreeable to record. And do further certify that I have been acquainted with the above named John Yocum for the space of 45 years past, he was a good farmer, a hard laboring man and a man of truth...and I do believe his oath is entitled to Credit. Given this Eleventh Day of August 1834.
