“Whereas, information has been communicated to the Executive, that certain individuals, residents of the Counties of Liberty and Jefferson, combined together under the name of `Regulators', have murdered one Thos. D. Yocum, of the County of Jefferson, burnt his late residence and appurtenances, and driven his widow and children from their home, and do still persist in persecuting her and preventing her by threats and violence from returning, or from collecting what remains of the property of said Yocum, deceased; and that the said individuals in connection with others, do still keep her and her family in constant apprehension for the safety of their lives; and are committing various other outrages.” Russell H. Bridges wrote a defense of Thomas D. Yocum entitled Yocum: A Different Viewpoint (xerox copy in possession of Barbara Jean Evans). Bridges was a criminal investigator, specializing in homicide, and he examined Yocum's life 141 years after his death. He believed that the stories about Yocum, claiming he was a murderer and thief, were manufactured. Bridges states “it would appear that a dreadful mistake was made by those who killed Yocum and that some hoary stories were manufactured about him to cover the mistake; the tales are without corroboration.” Following is such a story, from The Morning Star, 7 Oct 1841, Houston, Texas, p2: “The citizens of Jasper and Jefferson have lately been thrown into a state of excitement owing to the `lynching' of a man named Thomas Yocum. It seems this man for several years excited the suspicions of his neighbors by his connection with a gang of villains who were constantly engaged in swindling, robbery, or murder. He resided at a place styled the Pine Islands near the Neches River. Many negroes, fine horses, and cattle stolen from different sections, have often been traced to his home, and there the trails disappeared. Once a fine horse that was stolen in Liberty was traced directly to his stable, but not found. A suit was brought against him and he was arraigned for stealing the horses but, by means of suborned witnesses, he proved that he was in a distant part of the country when the horse was stolen, and was acquitted. The gang connected to him, it is supposed, were in the habit of taking the stolen property to Louisiana, where it was sold and the proceeds placed in his hands. It has long been reported that several murders have been committed at his home. One of his negroes confessed that he had committed seven murders; and it was currently reported that he had aided in the commission of thirteen murders in Louisiana. It is further said that his father, who lives on the Sabine, has been arraigned seven times for murder before the Court at Natchitoches and each time acquitted. The son seems to have followed his example. Horses, saddles, and other articles belonging to persons who have suddenly disappeared have been found in his possession, but no proff could be adduced that he had any agency in murdering them. A few years since a young man named Wylie with a large amount of money, put up at his house over night and was never heard of afterwards. His friends suspected that Yocum had murdered him, but could find no evidence to con...suspicion; but his crimes were perpetrated with impunity. A few weeks since he was detected in the attempt to swindle a man residing on Cedar Bayou, and it is believed, had laid plans to murder him. This roused the indignation of the many respectable citizens and they went to him and told him to leave the county. He promised to obey, but soon after, collected several of his gang and boasted that a large force of the citizens would join in his defense. This conduct exasperated the party that had notified him to leave the county; and they united to the number of 150, proceeded to his house, and not finding him home, removed the women and children, and burnt the house to the ground. A part of the same company went in pursuit of Yocum and found him at the house of one of his relatives on Cypress Bayou. They immediately secured him and started with him toward the Trinity. A day or two afterwards he was found dead in a prairie near the San Jacinto, pierced with five rifle balls. It was reported that he had attempted to escape and was shot while running away. Thus has perished one of the most singular men that has disgraced our Republic since the days of LaFitte; whether he merited the punishment that has been summarily inflicted will, perhaps, never be ascertained by the ordinary rules of judicial investigation, but this is certain, if he was innocent, the vengeance of Him who has said, `Whosoever sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed,' will assuredly reach the authors of his death.” Christopher Yocum (son of Thomas D. and Pamelia (Peace) Yocum) 17 Oct 1835-5 Nov 1835: marched from the Teneha District with Captain John M. Bradley and the “Libery Volunteers.” Henry Peace served with him. According to Bradley, by 21 Nov 1835, all but three of his men had deserted since they had been in the army. The San Augustine Redlander Edition, 30 Sept 1841: “...The least objectionable of all Yocum's tribe, one of his sons, Christopher, perhaps the only one against whom some heinous crime could not have been established, had married but a short time before the general breaking up of the gang. His wife refused to accompany him or follow him, but promised to live with him if he would return; and, after waiting a year, he determined to do so. Whether this was a mere ruse to obtain a foothold again, and to provide a house of refuge for others to carry out their threated revenge, I know not, but it proved a fatal affair for him. As soon as the sheriff heard of his presence, he immediately put him in jail at Beaumont, in order to save his life, and if possible assist him to escape. But all precautions were useless. The people rose immediately upon hearing of Yocum's arrival, and taking him out of jail, hung him upon the first tree. Thus was entirely destroyed the branch of the Murrel gang in Liberty County... The Morning Star, Houston, Texas, 7 Oct 1841, p2: “The son was captured and put in jail. It was reported that he hung himself, but Capt. Carey thinks others fixed the rope.”” Carolyn Yocum (daughter of Thomas D. and Pamelia (Peace) Yocum) no date: married John Choat. 27 Jan 1846: petitioned for a guardian to be appointed for her eight year old brother, Sam Houston Yocum. Kentucky History in Old Depositions: “Matthew Yocum deposed that he became acquainted with Harrodsburg in the year 1779, the Middle Trace in 1780, and Cop's Station in 1783. He located Walton's Lick on Lick Creek, and said that Powell's Trace `struck the creek about three quarter miles above the lick.'” Of the “twelve sons and three daughters” mentioned by Maria Thompson Davis, in her History of Mercer and Boyle Counties, Kentucky there remain, unaccounted for, several sons.
