| CLASSIFICATION OF ORNAMENTAL PLANTS
Ornamental plants may be classified based on the stem type, growth cycle, leaf form, its uses and other characteristics. HERBACEOUS ORNAMENTAL PLANT: Are plants with soft non-woody stem, the have primary vegetative part. Many horticultural plants especially those grown indoors are non-woody. They have a variety of uses in landscape. They may be classified in various ways. A. Growth Cycle Annual Ornamentals: These are planted each season. Flowering are prominent in the landscape in favourable season providing most of the colour and creating colourful flower beds, hanging baskets and cut flowers. Examples are petunia (Petunia spp), Zenia (Zenia elegans), Marigold (Tagetes spp) Biennial Ornamentals: These are vegetative in the first year of growth and bloom in the second season. Examples are Fox gloves (Digitalis spp) and Holly hock. Perennial Ornamentals: These live for a long time in the landscape so locating them requires a great deal of thought and planning. Perennials may be flowering or non-flowering perennials B. Flowering Perennials: Flowering perennial may be planted in flower bed to provide early blooms after which annuals may be planted. Examples are Geranium (Geranium spp), Lily (Lilium spp), Tulip (Tulip spp) C. Foliage or Non-Flowering Perennials: They are popular for indoor use in houses and offices as potted plants. Examples Coleus (Coleus), Sansiveria (Sansiveria spp), Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia spp). Other operational classification, herbaceous plants are used in a variety of other ways (indoor and outdoor) D. Bedding Plant: They are annual plants raised for planting outdoors in flower beds. They are usually started from seeds and later transplanted outdoor in the growing season.
