SELECTING LANDSCAPE PLANT
Choosing landscape plants can be confusing because there are so many plants to choose from. Selecting the right is a very important step in establishing your landscape. Selecting the important plant can increase maintenance chores through excessive pruning and it can make your landscape less functional. Selecting the right place can reduce these chores for examples extra watering, control of insect pest diseases. Things to consider in choosing the plant for your landscape.
You must have knowledge about the physical features of the plant for example, the size, the shape, evergreen or deciduous, the growth habit and the colour. You must know if the plant is hardy to the environment.
You must take note of the pH level of the soil.
Light level (sun and shade loving)
You must consider how you want to use the plant for example if it’s a shade tree or do you need the plant to grow low beneath the window level.
PLANT USAGE
When choosing landscape plant, you must know how you want to use this plant in landscape design. It could be used a foundational plant, accent plant, hedges, background, sheds, ground cover, container plant, border and hedges, specimen, wind and sound barrier, Trelyx and home orchard.
FOUNDATIONAL PLANT
Foundational plants are usually evergreen that is never lose their leaves, their sizes varies. They blend with the scale that is foundation plant of a strorey building is different from that of the bungalow. Foundation plant should be used in a pleasing design, in and around the base or foundation of the home. Foundation plant should accent the entrance. They should complement the architectural style of the home. It should give a feeling of unity between the house and the property. They should be hardy and require minimum maintenance.
ACCENT PLANT
They are used to attract the eye and used to create an interesting focal point. They usually have strong physical characteristics such as shape of leaves, colors (whether they are restricted to only the leaves, flower, fruit some produce berries), intensity.
GROUND COVER
Any vegetation that blanket the soil for landscape purpose. A ground cover means any group of plants that is used as a substitute for lawned grasses. For an average size home, a low growing ground cover might be anything up to 12 inch in height.
Covering the ground with a dense carpet of flowering foliage plant is a fairly recent planting technique designed primarily to reduce the labour of weeding among ornamental plant. Many plant covers are also decorative in their own right. Once established, most ground cover plant will smother weed or weed seedlings that attempt to grow beneath their canopy.
