Role of Technology in Language Teaching Blended learning and technology-assisted approaches involve the integration of technology tools and resources into language instruction. Technology can serve as a valuable tool to enhance language learning by providing access to authentic materials, interactive activities, multimedia resources, and opportunities for communication and collaboration. Blended Learning Environments Blended learning combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning components. It offers flexibility and personalized learning experiences by integrating in-person classroom activities with online platforms, such as learning management systems, virtual classrooms, or language learning apps. Blended learning environments allow for a variety of instructional approaches, including flipped classrooms, where learners engage with online content before in-class activities. Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) refers to the use of technology specifically designed for language learning purposes. CALL encompasses a wide range of tools and applications, such as language learning software, mobile apps, online language courses, virtual reality simulations, and language exchange platforms. These resources can provide learners with interactive exercises, multimedia materials, language practice opportunities, and immediate feedback. Effectiveness and Criticisms Blended learning and technology-assisted approaches have demonstrated several benefits in language teaching. They can enhance learners' engagement, motivation, and autonomy by providing access to authentic and interactive materials, fostering personalized learning experiences, and facilitating communication and collaboration among learners. Technology can also support differentiated instruction, allowing learners to progress at their own pace. However, concerns exist regarding the potential overreliance on technology, the need for teacher guidance and support, and the digital divide that may limit access to technology in certain contexts. It is crucial to strike a balance between technology use and face-to-face interaction, ensuring that technology serves as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for effective pedagogy. Language educators can leverage blended learning and technology-assisted approaches by integrating appropriate technology tools and resources into their instructional practices. This may involve selecting and evaluating language learning apps, incorporating online communication platforms, designing interactive multimedia materials, and providing guidance and support for learners' technology use.
