Black/African American. Persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups in Africa.

  • Hispanic/Latino All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American, South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. Persons who may have adopted the Spanish culture but are not otherwise of Spanish origin are to be treated according to their racial identity.

  • Women.

  • Disabled. A person who (1) has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities, (2) has a record of such an impairment, or (3) is regarded as having such an impairment. "Life ac­tivities" are defined as those which affect employability. "Substantially limits" means the degree that the impairment affects employability.

    VETERAN CATEGORIES:


    • Armed Forces Service Medal Veteran*. Any veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded.

    • Disabled Veteran*. (1) A veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, or (2) A person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

    • Newly Separated Veteran. Any veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during the one-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty.

    • Other Protected Veteran*. A veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized.

    • Recently Separated Veteran*. Any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran’s discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service.

    • Vietnam-era Veteran. A veteran, any part of whose active military, naval or air service was during the period 8/5/64 through 5/7/75, who (1) served on active duty for a period of more than 180 days and was discharged or released there from with other than a dishonorable discharge, or (2) was discharged or released from active duty because of a service connected disability.


    * These categories of covered veterans were added or modified by amendments to the affirmative action provisions of the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 (VEVRAA), as amended, made by the Jobs for Veterans Act (JVA) of 2002, effective September 7, 2007.
