What’s In It


Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

  • Technology and tools that people use to share, distribute, gather information and to efficiently and effectively communicate with one another or in groups. With this, ICT have transformed human communication by giving chances for people to communicate and leading the success of various advocacies.

Three categories:



  1. Information technology includes computers, which have become indispensable in modern societies to process data and save time and effort.




  1. Telecommunications technologies include telephones (with fax) and the broadcasting of radio and television, often through satellites.




  1. Networking technologies include the internet which extends to mobile phone technology, internet telephony, satellite communications




  • Social media platforms introduced new communication patterns, comprehensive content and format, created new forms of expression, fostered freedom and stimulated participation. The extent of knowledge sharing and collaboration widened allowing opportunity to speak out views, challenge social norms and effect social changes.




  • ICT and social media converge when mobilized for social change which includes positive relationships, economic development, political progress, cultural preservation and social revolution.




  • Most Popular Social Media Platforms 2020 includes Facebook, Youtube, WhatsApp, Messenger, Wechat, Twitter, TikTok, Podcast

ICT can Facilitate Social Relationships
The Internet has facilitated the formation of new social relationships among women. The women are engaged to
an online community due to common interests. Their engagement to the community is highly flexible and
unconstrained by geographical proximity. The individual member is a stranger one to another, comes from various
background and lives in several places all over Indonesia. Although the women communicate regularly online, they
still require face-to-face interactions in a physical space to fulfil their needs to be with other women. Women, in
fact, need both physical and virtual space to communicate with others. The blog becomes the virtual space that
accommodates women’ activities and interests, whereas public place such as parks, malls, cafes, conference hall
stand for the physical place that fulfil physical interaction

  • Social relationships are basic aspect of life. It was presented in the third level of the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs the Love and Belongingness having friendship, intimacy, family and sense of connection. Along with the development of ICT, social relationship pattern transformed into a more flexible structures. The regular usage of Internet has facilitated the formation of social relationships. The similarity of interests, habits, likes and needs has gathered people of various backgrounds and denominations to join the online community. All members can access and post relevant information or data to further improve ways in conducting one’s interest.




  • The use of social media sites offer convenience. In one press, messages can be sent in a matter of seconds and the response comes back immediately. Interactions become more like face-to-face. Having social media account helps meet and find new people. In just a click interesting stories, quotes, memorabilia, ideas, products and events are shared to many people allowing them to like or write comment and participate confidently. Interactions can be prolonged giving more excitement, more entertainment and better sense of purpose.




  • Social engagement using ICT have changed the structure of social relations. Geographical proximity is no longer a determinant for the social relationship. Relation in spatial proximity includes kinship, neighborhood, classmates, schoolmates, batch mates, collegeaus, co-workers, employees. New relation with strangers online or in virtual includes car mates, dining mates, food mates, fashion mates, travelling mates, game mates, plant mates and so on.

ICT can Facilitate Political Movements



  • In 2013, the Saartjie Baartman Women’s Centre (Cape Town, South Africa) was facing closure due to lack of resources. The African Gender Institute created a short video that captured the voices of women survivors of domestic violence. Twitter was used to share the video widely, raise awareness and put pressure on the provincial leader to provide urgent and ongoing funding for the centre. This resulted in the giving emergency funding as well as local communities bringing in food, clothing and money to support the centre.




  • The Women’s Learning Partnership acknowledge ICT as a means for social change created its own website (http://www.learningpartnership.org/ict-change). It aims to connect the use of ICT in eliminating marginalization of women. Hence, technology skills trainings and activities are provided for justice and human rights advocacy.




  • In the Middle East/North Africa, Egyptian students and young professionals used social media to exchange anonymous critiques and strategy on the government inaction over the rising of food prices. Their meetings and protests were organized by cell phone and Facebook pages. They alert each other to police actions by posting the news via text messaging. During the demonstrations, cell phones are raised up from the crowd to record the actions on video. The results were posted on Youtube within a matter of hours.




  • In December 2010, Tunisian Revolution began because of the lack of political freedoms and poor living conditions. Tunisian government blocked video sharing, blogs and twitter accounts. Tunisian people were able to use Facebook, to spread awareness of the revolution around globe.




  • In 1986, during the EDSA Revolution, the Radio Veritas AM radio station was used to mobilize the democratic movement informing Filipinos of political developments and for the nonviolent protests.




  • ICT has given opportunity for people to be aware of the problems in the society and offers participation from the social changes. ICT have given confidence, courage, control to effect change. Social relationships and political movement have gained support in using ICT.

The Role of ICT in Healthcare





  • ICT is increasing accessibility, improving communication, storing information methodologically and preventing errors. It also a means of promoting health education and processing medical researches.




  • In Telemedicine, the access of medical care to patients in remote locations is quick and more convenient. It varies from sending an email to a real-time video consultation.

The ICT opportunity for persons with disabilities



  • ICT enables the use of multiple means of communication - voice, text, and gestures - to access information and engage with others, and hence can help to address longstanding barriers of communication and interaction.

Roles of ICT in Agriculture



  • The spread of mobile phone service allowed farmers to harvest their products and directly market to wholesalers without the middle man.




  • Radio and television were used by farmers, entrepreneurs, extension workers and other stakeholders to disseminate information on various innovation in agricultural technology like the School-On-Air.




  • Internet can facilitate dialogue among various communities sharing information between government planners, development agencies, researchers, and technical experts.




  • Global Positioning System (GPS) helped farmers in geo-fencing, map-making and surveying. In Kenya, elephant bull was tagged with a device that sends a text messages alerting authorities whenever it is near the farm. This is a solution to prevent the destruction of precious crops.




  • Geographic Information System (GIS) can analyze the soil to prompt farmer what to plant and where to plant.




  • Automatic Milking System that milk the dairy cattle. It is controlled by an automatic robot. Farmers can also improve herd management by using the data gathered by the computer. Each cow is tracked and examined, alerting the farmer with the unusual changes that could mean sickness or injuries.




  • Smart Agriculture use IoT sensors to collect and monitor the state of crops, staff performance and equipment efficiency. It allow farmers to foresee production and profit.

How is ICT can improve business efficiency?



  • Boost customer satisfaction through improved communications. Customers can have their query using email or live chat especially for product defects or malfunctions.




  • The HR Cloud-based solutions allow HR staff to schedule and track both manpower and jobs.




  • With the rise of telecommunications and video conferencing, employees undergo training at their convenience and cheaper

  • With the advances in digital communications like video chats can be set up to allow direct access 24/7 for any queries, suggestions, creative intervention to improve product delivery.
