2.2East African Industries

There are several currently active industries in East Africa that could increase productivity or otherwise enhance profitability through the use of data or services related to space activity.

2.2.1Manufacturing

The most critical issues facing the manufacturing sector are the lack of access to an effective and efficient labor force and inadequate infrastructure. In contrast, the abundance of raw materials and low-cost agricultural products are factors that can drive the growth of manufacturing. [14]

Through space related activities, the labor force would be improved by an increased focus on scientific and technological education systems as well as the availability of reliable and effective training. In addition, the infrastructure will be improved as a part of establishing the space industry within the East African region.

2.2.2Tourism

Currently, tourism is major sector that supports economic growth within the East African region. Tourism falls into two primary categories. The first is cultural tourism, involving those seeking to observe the way of life of different tribes and families, gain an understanding of traditional rituals, and learn about the history while taking in the historical sites. Adventure tourism involves those who travel to see the abundant wildlife through safaris, partake in mountain climbing, or simply experience the tropical climate.

Establishing a space industry in the East African region creates a new reason for people internationally and domestically to visit the area. For instance, an established space industry in East Africa presents the opportunity for more business travel in the form of meetings, conferences, and trade shows. This type of travel lends itself to promote an exchange of ideas, development of new collaborations, and ultimately economic growth as communication spreads about the benefits East Africa has to offer.

2.2.3Telecommunications

The African telecommunications industry is by all counts a growth industry. Traffic levels are rising, networks are being extended throughout the continent, investments are being targeted in new services, and there is extensive sharing and outsourcing. Table 1 below shows recent outsourcing among African telecommunication companies.

Establishment of a spaceport in East Africa would stimulate additional telecommunications growth, primarily in the East African region but to a lesser extent throughout the continent due to additional bandwidth needed for spaceport development and operations, media coverage, and public interest.

2.2.4Trade and Infrastructure

Easy access to quality infrastructure is vital for the development of the manufacturing sector. Transport infrastructure is needed throughout the value chain – from the sourcing of input goods to delivering manufactured goods to the domestic market and shipment to foreign destinations. Meanwhile, access to a reliable supply of water and electricity is key for the production process. Unfortunately, these are all areas where Africa lags the rest of the world. [14]

The improvement of infrastructure is a major part of establishing the space industry. From an increased road system in order to support large transport trucks to increased railways for freight trains to carry space related components, the benefit of high quality infrastructure is increased trade among the African nations, continental trade, and manufacturing capabilities.

2.2.5Banking and Investments

Because establishing a space industry in the East African region presents the opportunity of improved manufacturing, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced telecommunications, more nations will have the desire and need to conduct business with those in the East African region. This business will range from additional rocket launches, educational collaborations, new workforce contracts, and increased trade of goods and services, to name a few
