From the middle to the top of the stratosphere is the ozone layer. The reason the sky looks blue is because of the ozone layer. Ozone is a poisonous bluish gas with a strong odor. It is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms (O3). The ozone layer acts like a shield that absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) energy which is destructive to life and causes cancer.
