To act as a loading indicator. If you pan or zoom the map view, you will notice that the layers button will begin to slowly fade in and out. This is to indicate that the data is loading. Once the data has loaded, the fade animation will stop.

To control the layers overlay. If you press the layers button, you are presented with the layers overlay.

In this example, there are 3 layers available: Auckland Urban Aerial 2012, Bing Maps and Auckland Underground Services. The layers available to you will differ depending on the project that you are currently accessing.

You can see that the first layer in this example, (Auckland Urban Aerial 2012) is disabled (turned OFF). The other two layers (Bing Maps and Auckland Underground Services) are enabled (turned ON). This means that any data associated with the two layers that are enabled will be displayed in the map view. If we disable Bing Maps, that layer will immediately be removed from the map view.

In this example, the Bing Maps layer has been removed and we can now only see the data associated with Auckland Underground Services.

If there is an arrow to the left of a layer name, this means there are sublayers which can be individually activated and deactivated. If you click on this layer, the sub layer list will drop down and you can turn off data you are not interested in. This will update your map and augmented reality views immediately.

In this example, we can activate or deactivate the Wastewater, Stormwater and Water layers independently.
