And later 12 miles off Gallipoli during the first day of the attack. He vividly describes the size of Mudros Harbour and the massing fleet stating "There must be nearly 200 Transports". "Practically every class of British Warship from the small submarine to the very latest - the Queen Elizabeth with her double tier of 15 Inch Guns... Turkish 6 Inch guns have bounced off her with just dents.." He also mentions numerous French and Russian ships and the white painted hospital ships with their large green stripes and Red Cross markings, along with oil and water tankers, repair ships and mine sweepers. Mentions going ashore and doing training on the hills "...which are similar to those where the actual fighting will take place.." He states how tiring the training is with all the equipment which may have to last up a month. Items listed include soap, towel, clean singlets and socks, over coat, 200 rounds of ammo and two days rations. "..After being disappointed twice I know we are actually going to land on Sunday morning at 4am..." "There will be 400 men in this operations and at three places will attempt to land.." "From the Brigade the 9th 10th (us) and the 11th do the attack and the 12th support." "The landing on the point of the Peninsula is to be made by British troops, the middle by us (Aust and NZ and 2 batteries of Indian Native troops) and the top by the French". Saturday: "Rotten - an detailed off and do not land with the first lot... go ashore on the Monday with the colonel's horse etc, will now probably get despatch riding work or something...". Sunday (the landing): "... Can hear the carronade although the fighting is about 10 miles away. From the deck we can see the smoke of the battle. The Lizzie's 15 inch guns make a big noise and shake this boat and drops her shells right over the other boats on the Turkish positions..." "Battle been raging all day and we are moving in to take the wounded..." "Great bustle and excitement, the operations have been entirely successful everywhere, the Australians are taking guns and trenches at point of bayonet".
