Rebuilding Europe and Japan
The war left Europe and Japan in ruins. Millions had been killed and even more were displaced-refugees.
How to feed, house, and clothe these people became paramount. Add to that the specter of Communism.

In Japan, Douglas MacArthur was named SCAP, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. Six days after the official surrender aboard the Battleship Missouri, MacArthur flew into Japan, got into a limousine and headed for the US embassy. Once there he ordered his chief of staff General Eichelberger to "have our country's flag unfurled, and in Tokyo's sun let it wave in its full glory as a symbol of hope for the oppressed and as a harbinger of victory for the right."
He set up his command in the Dai Ichi Insurance building, across from the Emperor’s palace. He refused to go to the Emperor; he said he would let the Emperor come to him.
As SCAP, MacArthur oversaw the rebuilding of Japan and the reordering of Japanese society and politics. Like the Nuremburg trials, there were war crimes trials in Japan. Many of the top leaders, including Tojo, were executed. The members of the royal family however were never tried for atrocities.
In Europe the allies had differences right away. The US and GB wanted to get things organized but they met resistance from the Soviets, who wanted control themselves. These differences would result in the Cold War.
