ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION AS A CORRELATE OF JOB CREATION IN BENUE STATE, NIGERIA (2)
Summary of Literature Review

Education is viewed as a veritable instrument for the realization of the goals and aspirations of any nation. The importance, benefits and objectives of entrepreneurship education were extensively discussed. The aims of entrepreneurship education was stressed. The role of universities in the transmission and implementation of government’s policy on entrepreneurship education were equally outlined.

The importance of determining the relationship between entrepreneurship education and job creation was discussed. This relationship is based on the fact that the success of entrepreneurs in business depends on many factors including education and training. The major constrains slowing down the progress of entrepreneurship education were highlighted. The theoretical framework for entrepreneurship education was presented via: The Human Capital Theory, Need for Achievement Theory and Risk Taking Theory. The theories portray entrepreneurship education as an intervention tool for stimulating job creation, employment and poverty alleviation in any given economy.

Despite the effort of universities in transmitting and implementing governments policy on entrepreneurship education, the effort however has not being successful because there still exist indication of high rate of youth unemployment, poverty and other social vices in all parts of the country and Benue state in particular. The situation has deteriorated to the extent that it seems undergraduate students are still not adequately prepared for entry into the labour market even after going through entrepreneurship education courses..

Finally, empirical studies and findings of some previous researchers on various aspects of entrepreneurship education at different times and parts of the world were discussed. The previous researchers focused on the contribution of entrepreneurship development to sustainable economic growth through skills acquisition, employment and poverty alleviation but there is little attention on the relationship between entrepreneurship education programme of universities and job creation. Thus the researcher’s interest and desire to carry out the present study was sustained and the outcome will facilitate the awareness on the need for university students to take their entrepreneurship courses very serious. This will aid the acquisition of skills and competence that will adequately prepare them to take up self-employment (job creation) as career option thereby alleviating poverty and contributing to the overall development of Benue State and beyond.
