Entrepreneurship Education Skills Acquired by Undergraduate Students

65

Research question one sought the entrepreneurship skills of undergraduate students used for the study. The findings are summarized in table 1. The result revealed that undergraduate students acquire entrepreneurship skills after completing an entrepreneurship education course. This is in line with Oyeola (2010) who asserted that the policy thrust of entrepreneurship education is the acquisition of entrepreneurship skills and ideas by students so as to be self-employed and self-reliant after graduation. The findings also agree with the work of Ayandike, Emeh and Ukah (2012) which revealed that students acquire entrepreneurship skills which serves as key to the knowledge of entrepreneurship and that entrepreneurship education skills play a strong role in forming the new entrepreneur. The world today is a global village and since an intending entrepreneur must be conversant and in tune with events around and about him, entrepreneurship education becomes a critical factor in preparing and empowering the entrepreneur with the necessary skills and qualities required of him. Uduak & Aniefiok (2011) also found that entrepreneurship education helps students to acquire increase understanding of entrepreneurship and equip them with skills relevant for job creation. Such skills also include creativity, confidence, drive, courage and innovation which are needed in order to create employment for self and others. They also found that education and training can influence the development of entrepreneurial role.

Entrepreneurship education courses can indeed raise the level of students’ skill on entrepreneurial activities. The items presented in table 1 are skills undergraduate students acquire after completing an entrepreneurship education course. These skills include the following: Ability to identify available career options through entrepreneurship education, ability to gain a good understanding of economics and free enterprise to start and sustain a new business, knowledge about the practical details needed to start a new business, ability to develop business ideas with ease, identification of potential sources of resources, ability to identify creative ways to get things done with limited resources, identification of solution to problems and willingness to work hard to set up a good business after graduation. This is because the mean ratings are above 2.50 set as criterion level for accepting an item. However, the respondents disagree on item 6 that they would be completely unable to start a business after completing an entrepreneurship education course with a mean of 1.43 and a standard deviation of 0.49. The cluster mean of 3.03 with a standard deviation of 0.31 showed that items in table 1 are skills undergraduate students acquire after completing an entrepreneurship education course.
