ACTRA SATELLITE PHONE QUICK USER’S GUIDE

      1. EFFICIENT OPERATION

    • Rotate antenna and extend fully (it pulls out to be twice as long)

    • Make sure the antenna has clear view of the sky and points vertically.

    • Don’t touch the antenna. This may affect call quality and may cause phone to operate at higher power and drain the battery.

    • Don't move around too much when making a call, stay in the open.

    • If at a car use the optional rooftop antenna.

      1. BATTERY

    • Charge the battery for 3-4 hr before use if phone hasn’t been used for a month or more.

    • If battery level is low, Low Battery appears on the display, and a warning tone (two beeps) sounds.

    • A fully charged battery will last about 20 hours on standby (maybe less)

    • If at car use the car charger to keep battery fully charged.

    • There is a spare battery that can be swapped in if the battery runs flat.

      1. SWITCHING PHONE ON/OFF

    • To switch on or off, press bottom LHS button with red circle.

    • Enter PIN (ROGA) when prompted, and press OK. Display of completed indicates power-on sequence is completed.

    • Normally Registering followed by Registered will be displayed. This may take a few seconds.
    • When the phone is connected to a network, it will display Iridum and the little “house” symbol at the bottom. The phone is ready for use.

If Searching is displayed before Registering…, the phone may be having difficulties establishing contact with a network. Wait a while and/or move to an area with a clear view of the sky. If problem persists, manually select the satellite network.

To manually select the satellite network:

    • Press the Menu button,

    • Scroll to Network Selection and press OK to select,

    • At Register Now?, press OK to select.

      1. MAKING CALLS (from Australia)

To call the (other) Satellite phone, dial the number direct.

To call a mobile from the Sat phone, dial the mobile number direct.

To call a land line from the Sat phone, dial the full national number (e.g.) 02 87654321
If the phone connects you to a number that is not in Australia, you may have to dial the full International code – viz, , dial “00”, the code for Australia “61”, the Australian STD Area Code without the leading ‘0” (i.e. “2” for NSW/ACT), then the desired number, e.g. 00 61 2 87654321.
The numbers of the ACTRA Satellite phones are:

    Bimberi 0147 148005 PIN 7642 or ROGA

    Gingera 0147 148006 PIN 7642 or ROGA

These are in the phonebook on each phone.

    SMS

Text messaging is generally a more reliable means of communicating when setting, vetting, or collecting.

It takes less signal and only needs a short duration of contact.

Consult the User’s Guide for more information.

    Dear ,
It is our understanding that you have agreed to allow your land to be used as part of the ACT Rogaining Championships that will take place on the weekend of the in the . Thank you very much for your generosity in allowing access. This letter is to inform you of the details of this event and how, if at all, it will impact you as a landowner of part of the rogaining area.
Rogaining is a semi competitive sport bridging the gap between bushwalking and orienteering. The aim is to find as many ‘controls’ (orange and white flags) as possible, spread over an area in a fixed amount of time using only compass and map. No set course is involved, teams consist of 2-5 navigators (usually 2 or 3) and the event represents a challenging day-walk for most entrants.
The event planned in is a 24hour event and will cover a total area of around <100 square kilometres>. Please see the attached map which shows the exact area that we are using for the event. If any parts of your property within our course area are deemed sensitive then we are happy to mark those, out-of-bounds. Out-of-bounds regions are common in rogaines; all farm buildings will be marked out-of-bounds as a matter of course. Controls will be placed at about one per two square kilometres.
All rogaines are non-smoking and fires are prohibited. No litter is to be left anywhere on the course and competitors are under strict instructions regarding leaving gates as they find them and avoiding stock. The competitors are clear that they have no permission to cross the event area outside the specified event times.
The ACTRA, as an affiliate of the Australian Rogaining Association, has $10M public liability cover for all its official activities. This cover extends to all landholders and administrative and management bodies of land used for events. A copy of the certificate of currency is included.
Traditionally, this event attracts around 180-200 competitors in 60-70 teams, which may sound like a lot of people. However since there is no set course, teams very quickly diffuse over the course and often spend hours without seeing another team. Also the average team visits only about 25% of all controls so most of the course has very infrequent use during the event. The large size of the course is only to keep the handful of competitive teams busy.
Apart from access on the day of the event, visits by organisers (on foot) will be required on weekends preceding the event to determine the course. The controls would be hung the week prior to the event and removed soon after the event.
Thank you again for allowing rogaining to take place on your property. The event starts at noon on Saturday and finishes at noon on Sunday. You are most welcome to come along to the start/finish are behind and enjoy the barbeque at the end of the event.
If you require and further information about rogaining, the ACTRA or this proposed event, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
    Yours Sincerely Enclosed:

    - Copy of certificate of currency for the ACTRA insurance policy

    - Portion of 1:25000 topographical maps, reproduced at 50%,

    indicating the course
