| Interview: Interview is a key method in qualitative research design. Interview seeks to describe the meaning of central themes in the life world of the subjects. Interviews are particularly useful for getting the story behind a participant’s experience. There are mainly 3 types of interviews are being used by the researcher in the arena of social science.
Structured interviews are, essentially, verbally administered questionnaires, in which a set of predetermined questions are asked, with little or no variation and with no scope for follow-up questions to responses that warrant further elaboration. Conversely, unstructured interviews do not reflect any preconceived theories or ideas and are performed with little or no organization. Semi-structured interviews consist of several key questions that help to define the areas to be explored, but also allows the interviewer or interviewee to diverge in order to pursue an idea or response in more detail. In this study, the used interviews for collecting data were mixed in nature. Since, here different stakeholders are involved, such as, local people who are employed in the gas field; local people who didn’t get work there, contractors, local leaders, chevron officials, village development organization (VDO) leaders and different NGO workers. Thus, purposively and based on convenience, this study has interviewed 2 chevron officials, 5 local elites, 3 VDO leaders, 2 NGO workers, 8 local people who did not get work in chevron, 5 local chevron’s employee and 2 contractors and 3 local representatives. In total 30 respondents were interviewed in this study. The remarkable fact regarding interviews is that the nature of interviews was diverse based on the nature of the respondents. For more illustration, during interviewing chevron’s officials and NGO workers, structured interview pattern has been followed. The reason behind using structured interview pattern in this regard is that these respondents are pretty much aware and educated. Beside this, they had restricted time. On the other hand, during interviewing local elites, local representatives, contractors and VDO leaders, semi-structured interview pattern has been followed. Through applying semi-structured interview catalogue, an effort has been made to triangulate and connect all the information and views gathered from the respondents. Meanwhile, in case of interviewing local people, an informal pattern of interview has followed. Local people are the most represented people and they are living in a state where they are being taught to think and speak. Thus, in case of them, most informal situation has maintained to convince them that they were at freedom. Download 1.22 Mb. Share with your friends:
