Duty faithfully performed
If to perform ones duty faithfully is mans highest attribute which deserves the highest commendation. The performance of that duty on the favorable or disc------ side. From the time the first slaves were landed in the New England states until the ascent of Lincoln rang out the death knell of slavery from the White House in 1863. All thanking men believe that slavery on the American continent was foredoomed and would and only after a protracted and bitter struggle and that this would never be a fully united cruelty until its consummation. The great factors in this great revolution had of necessity to be exceptional men created to carry out on each side then creators will. Lincoln and Davis the two heads on either side with Grant and Lee then the great executive leaders. It is not to be doubted that these four great men were activated by the purest and most patriotic motives and through poor demented fools have applied the epithets of tyrant & traits to them all the world at large deems them time patriots. The foundation which this __ stands owes it strengthen great mistaking ability possessed by those four principal action in carrying out the purposes of the almighty in regards to this country. When the venerable Bishop Meade in his last times placed his hands on Gen Lee’s head and told him - his work would surely be a success ___ ___ as an assurance of the success of the confederate case. We can easily see that it meant the successfully carrying out of his part of the program assigned him by his heavenly master. In the chain which now binds this country together in indescribable unity there are no stronger links than those forged by Robert Edward Lee
