Teaching 6: STABAT MATER
Stabat Mater dolorosa

Juxta crucem lacrimosa

Dum pendebat Fillius

Cujus animam gementem

Contristatam et dolentem

Pertransivit gladius

O quam tristis et afflicta

Fuit illa benedicta

¡Mater Unigeniti!
Quae moerebat, et dolebat

Pia Mater dum videbat

Nati poenas inclyti
¿Quis est homo, qui non fleret

Matrem Christi si videret

In tanto supplicio?
¿Quis non posset contristari

¡Christi Matrem! contemplari

Dolentem cum Filio?
Pro peccatis suae gentis

Vidit Jesum in tormentis

Et flagellis subditum
Vidit suum dulcem natum

Moriendo desolatum,

Dum emisit spiritum
¡Eia, Mater, fons amoris!

Me sentire vim doloris

Fac, ut tecum lugeam
Fac ut ardeat cor meum

in amando Christum Deum

Ut sibi complaceam
Sancta Mater, istud agas

Crucifixi fige plagas

Cordi meo valide
Tui natu vulnerati,

Tam dignati pro me pati,

Poenas mecum divide
Fac me tecum pie flere

Crucifixo condolere

Donec ego vixero
Juxta crucem tecum stare,

Et me tibi sociare,

In planctu desidero.
¡Virgo virginum praeclara!

Mihi jam non sis amara

Fac me tecum plangere
Fac ut portem Christi mortem

Passionis fac consortem

Et plagas recolere
Fac me plagis vulnerari

Fac me cruce inebriari

Et cruore Filli
Flammis ne urar succensus

Per te, Virgo, sim defensus

In die judicii
Christe, cum sit hinc exire

Da per Matrem venire

Ad palmam victoriae
Quando corpus morietur

Fac ut animae donetur

Paradisi gloria. Amen.
Translation:
The pious Mother

weeps close to the Cross

where her Son is suspended
And her sad, tearful soul

suffers as if she were transfixed

by a fierce knife.

Oh how sad and afflicted

the blessed Mother looked,

so full of torments!

As she sadly observed

And looked at the pain

Of her beloved Son.
But perchance will not a man weep

Seeing the Mother of Christ

In such sorrow?
And, oh pious Mother, who would not

feel sad if looked at you

subject to such rigor?
The sweet Mother saw Jesus

in so deep torment

for the sins of the world.
She saw her beloved dying Son

who helplessly rendered

the spirit to his Father.
Oh Mother, fountain of love!

Make me feel your sorrow,

and I will weep with you.
So my beloved Christ

embraced by my heart

will live more in him than with me.
And to encourage me to love him,

engrave on my heart

his wounds
and now divide,

Lady, with me

those wounds that he suffered for me
Make me weep with you

and truly feel pity

for his pains for life.
Because I wish to be

with your compassionate heart

on the cross where I see him.
Virgins of holy virgins!

May my tears be so eager

that my weeping be sweet to me.
And may his passion and death

has in my soul this luck:

always to see his pains.
Make me fall in love with his Cross,

to live and dwell on it,

as a signal of my faith and love.
May they be fervent and fiery,

defending me with you

in the Last Judgment day.
May Christ’s death

protect me when my life and soul

face this heavy critical moment.
And as my body is quiet,

may my soul go

to his eternal glory. So be it.

In case of an extraordinary thanksgiving, for instance at the end of a Retirement or of a course of Teachings, this prayer should be recited after Manetras Abbami Mani, Psalm 137.

Psalm 137”
Confitebor tibi, Domine in toto corde meo

Quoniam audisti verba oris mei

In conspectu angelorum psallam tibi

Adorabo ad templum sanctum tuum

Et confitebor nomini tuo

Super misericordia tua, et veritate tua,

Quonian magnificasti super omne nomen sanctum tuum

In quaqumque die invocavero te, exaudi me;

Multiplicabis in anima mea virtutem.
Confiteantur tibi, Domine, omnes reges terrae,

Quia audierunt omnia verba oris tui

Et cantent in viis Domini

Quonian magna est gloria Domini

Quoniam excelsus Dominus, et humilia respicit et alta a longe cognoscit

Si ambulavero in medio tribulationis, vivificabis me,

Et super iram inimicorum meorum extendisti manum tuam

Et salvum me fecit dextera tua

Domine retribuet pro me

Domine, misericordia tua in saeculum

Opera manuum tuarum ne despicias.
Translation:
I will praise thee with my whole heart:

before the angels will I sing praise unto thee.

I will worship toward thy holy temple,

and praise thy name for thy loving-kindness and for thy truth:

for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

In the day when I cried thou answered me, and strenghtened

me with strength of my soul.
All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord,

when they hear the words of thy mouth.

when they hear the words of thy mouth.

Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord:

for great is the glory of the Lord.

Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly:

but the proud he knows afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me:

thou shall stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of my enemies,

and thy right hand shall save me.

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me:

thy mercy, of Lord, endures forever:

forsake me not the works of thine own hands.

Psalm 113”

In exitu Israel de Egypto

Domus Jacob de populo barbaro

Facta est Judaca sanctificatio ejus

Israël potestas ejus

Mare vidit, et fugit

Jordanis conversus est retrorsum

Montes exultaverunt ut arietes,

Et colles sicut agni ovium.

Quid est tibi mare quod fugisti;

et tu Jordanis, ¿quia conversus es retrorsum?

Montes exsultastis sicur arietes,

et colles sicut agni ovium

A facie Domini mota est terra

a facie Dei Jacob

Qui convertit petram in stagna aquarum,

et rupem in fontes aquarum

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis

sed nomini tuo da gloriam

Super misericordia tua, et veritate tua

nequando dicant gentes: ¿Ubi est Dues eorum?

Deus autem noster in caelo

omnia quaecumque voluit, fecit

Simulacra gentium argentum et aurum

opera manuum hominum

Os habent, et non loquentur;

oculos habent, et non videbunt.

Aures habent, et non audient;

ares habent, et non adorabunt.

Manus habent, et non palpabunt;

pedes habent, et non ambulabunt;

non clamabunt in gutture suo

Similes illis fiant qui faciunt ea,

et omnes qui confidunt in ais.

Domus Israël speravit in Domino

adjutor eorum et protector eorum est

Domus Aaron speravit in Domino;

adjutor eorum et protector eorum est.

Qui timent Dominum, speraverunt in Domino;

adjutor eorum et protector eorum est.

Dominus memor fuit nostri et benedixit nobis.

Benedixit domui Israël;

benedixit domui Aaron

Benedixit omnibus, qui timent Dominum

puellis cum majoribus

Adjiciat Dominus super vos,

super vos, et super filios vestros.

Benedicti vos a Domino,

qui fecit caelum et terram

Caelum caeli Domino;

terram autem dedit fillis hominum.

Non mortui laudabunt te Domine;

neque omnes, qui descendunt in infernum

Sed nos qui vivimus, benedicimus Domino,

ex hoc nunc et usque in saeculum.

Translation:
When Israel went out of Egypt,

the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;

Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.

The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.

The mountains skipped like rams,

and the little hills like lambs

What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest?

thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?

Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams;

and ye little hills, lime lambs?

Tremble, thou earth. at the presence of the Lord,

at the presence of the God of Jacob:

Which turned the rock into a standing water,

the flint into a fountain of waters.

Not onto us, O Lord, not unto us,

but unto thy name give glory

for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.

Wherefore should the heathen say,

Where is now their God?

Bur our God is in the heavens:

he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

Their idols are silver and gold,

the work of men’s hands.

They have mouths, but they speak not:

eyes, but they see not:

They have ears, but they hear not:

noses have they, but they smell not:

They have hands. but they handle not:

feet have they, but they walk not:

neither speak they through their throat.

They that make them are like unto them;

so is every one that trusteth in them.

O Israel, trust thou in the Lord:

he is their help and their shield.

O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;

he is their help and their shield.

Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord:

he is their help and their shield.

The Lord hath been mindful of us:

he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel:

he will bless the house of Aaron.

He will bless them that fear the Lord.

both small and great.

The Lord shall increase you more and more,

you and your children.

Ye are blessed of the Lord

which made heaven and earth.

The dead praise not the Lord,

neither any that go down into silence.

But we will bless the Lord

from this time forth and for evermore.

Prayer about Illusoriness of Man”

In this Prayer –“Manetras mar sem el”– the first Psalm 44 should be recited, named by the first word of versicle 4: “Accingere”. “Mar sem el” should be recited after this Psalm. And finally, the Psalm 132 should be recited, which is named by the first letters of versicle 1: “Ecce quam bonum”.

On the occasion of death of one’s beloved being or of that of a Son, also “Accingere” should be entirely recited.

The first stanza of “Accingere” should be recited standing; and “Mar sem el”, seated. In the beginning of “Ecce quam bonum”, one should be standing with stretched arms; the latter just during the first stanza, as an indication that one salutes fraternally.

On the occasion of death of a Son, all kiss the dead person while recite the first stanza; but if the situation is for a Son that leaves to fulfill a mission, then he is embraced by the others. The rest of stanzas of “Ecce quam bonum” should be recited standing.

Psalm 44”

Eructavit cor meum verbum bonum

Dico ego opera mea regi

Lingua mea calamus scribae

Velociter scribentis

Speciosus forma prae filiis hominum

Difusa es gratia in labiis tuis

Propterea benedixit te, Deus in aeternum

Accingere gladium tuum super femur tuum potentissime

Specie tua et pulchritudine tua

Intende prospere, procede et regna

Propter veritatem et mansuetudinem et justitiam

Et deducet te mirabiliter dextera tua

Sagittae tuae acutae, populi sub te cadent

In corda inimicorum regis

Sedes tua, Deus, in saeculum saeculi

Virga directionis virga regni tui

Dilexisti justitiam, et odisti iniquitatem

Propterea unxit te, Deus, Deus tuus oleo laetitiae

Prae consortibus tuis

Myrrha, et gutta, et casia a vestimentis tuis a domibus eburneis

Ex quibus delectaverunt te filiae regum in honore tuo

Astitit regina a dextris tuis in vestitu deaurato

Circumdata varietate

Audi, filia, et vide, et inclina aurem tuam

Et obliviscere populum tuum, et domum patris tui

Et concupiscet rex decorem tuum

Quoniam ipse est Dominus Deus tuus, et adorabunt eum.
Et filiae Tyri in muneribus

Vultum tuum deprecabuntur omnes dives plebis

Omnis gloria ejus filiae regis ab intus

In fimbriis aureis circumamicta varietatibus

Adducentur regi virgenes post eam

Proximae ejus afferentur tibi

Afferentur in laetitia et exsultatione

Pro patribus tuis nati sunt tibi filii

Constitues eos principes super omnem terram

Memor erunt nominis tui

In omni generatione et generationem

Propterea populi confitebuntur tibi in aeternum

et in saeculum saeculi.
Translation:
My heart is inditting a good matter:

I aspeak of the things that I have made touching the king:

my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

Thou art fairer than the children of men:

grace is poured into thy lips:

therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

Gird thy sword upon thy thigh,

O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.

And in thy majesty ride prosperously

because of truth and meekness and righteousness;

and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.

Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies;

whereby the people fall under thee.

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:

the scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter.

Thou lovest righteousness, and hatests wickedness:

therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee

with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia,

out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

King’s daughters were among thy honorable women:

upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.

Hearken, O Daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear;

forget also thine own people, and thy father’s house;

So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty:

for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with gift;

even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favor.

The king’s daughter is all glorious within:

her clothing is of wrought gold.

She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework:

the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.

With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought:

they shall enter into the king’s palace.

Instead of thy father shall be thy children,

whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.

I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations:

therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
