Tools for Keeping Up with New Research in the Biosciences

2016

STEP 1
CREATE A CONTAINER FOR CONTENT: USING ENDNOTE, MENDELEY, ZOTERO, etc.

OVERVIEW: Tools for efficiently obtaining, downloading, organizing, searching and citing articles can make the life of a researcher infinitely easier. Happily for us, there’s an amazing number of free/fee-based applications that can accomplish this in 2014. At the Stanford School of Medicine, three of the more popular tools are, 1) EndNote, 2) Mendeley, and 3) Zotero.
ENDNOTE: Endnote is a very powerful reference/PDF/bibliography manager and a great adjunct to your tools for “keeping current.” Mac and Windows compatible, Endnote can organize references from PubMed (and virtually any other literature database); retrieve articles automatically for those references; provide PDF mark-up tools; and generate cleanly formatted bibliographies.

STEP 2

CREATE AN AUTOALERT IN YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE DATABASE(S)
OVERVIEW: Most literature databases, search engines now provide some “auto-alerts” capable of delivering newly loaded content based on stored searches. How do they work? You, a) create an account, b) run a search, c) save the search and indicate how often you’d like to received alerts. For example:

Pubmed’s “My NCBI”Autoalerts: Access from Lane’s website: http://lane.stanford.edu/index.html Create a My NCBI account to save your search and set up an alert service. After creating your account, run a search. Click on Save Search and follow the prompts. You set preferences to determine how frequently the updates are delivered; the format the references are displayed; and whether to receive an email even if no references are retrieved.

SCOPUS Autoalerts: Access from Lane’s website: http://lane.stanford.edu/index.html Create a SCOPUS account to save your search and set up an alert service. After creating your account, run a search. Click on Set Alert and follow the prompts. You can set preferences to determine how frequently the updates are delivered. When you received an update, you can follow the embedded links to access and download the references to a bib management program like EndNote.

GOOGLE SCHOLAR Autoalerts: Access: http://scholar.google.com Login to your Google account. Click on Alerts type in your search terms, then Create Alert. List Alerts displays all your saved alerts.

STEP 3

MONITOR ARTICLE RECOMMENDATION SERVICES TO LEVERAGE EXPERT OPINION
OVERVIEW: Somewhat different from standard literature databases, “article recommendation resources” actually depend on the opinions of a cadre of experts who review the literature in different subject areas. For example, if you’re an emergency medicine clinician, you could create an alert profile in F1000 based on the expert opinion in emergency medicine imaging, resuscitation emergencies, pain management, etc.

june
Faculty of 1000 Prime (F1000 Prime) Access: type f1000 into the Lane Search box. Create a F1000 account, run a search in Article Recommendations then click on Store Search then set up an Email Alert. You can use Advanced to add a variety of filters to the retrieved articles: e.g., strength of recommendation; faculty area-of-expertise (e.g. anesthesia, research methodology, etc.).

NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL oF MEDICINE “JOURNAL WATCH:” Access: type journal watch into the Lane Search box. Journal Watch reviews over 250 scientific and medical journals. The physician-editors survey high-impact medical journals in 13 specialty areas to identify key finding. The summaries are presented with a clinical perspective and expert commentary. After registering, users can receive specialty OR topic updates, a medical newsletter, and new CME exams. Caution: you can create alerts based on broad subject areas, e.g., cardiology, but not on narrower search terms, e.g., tetralogy of fallot.

STEP 4

SET UP eMail delivery of Electronic Table of Contents from key journals
OVERVIEW: A very popular method for getting the most recent issues, via email, of your top journals.

Annals of internal medicine etocs: Access: http://annals.org Locate the Alerts option, register with the journal, and then indicate what type of alert to activate, e.g., current issue. The email looks like this:

STEP 5
