Obit: Bernice M. Steele, 94, of Central City died Monday, Jan 21, 2002 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Mrs. Steel was born Oct 27, 1907, in Clay County to Adam and Dorothea (Wahl) Burbach. She grew up in Stockham and Sutton, graduating from Sutton in 1925. She married Francis Steele on Feb 1, 1938, in Los Angeles. The couple lived in Los Angeles and then Aurora, later retiring in Yucapia, Calif., in 1979. Her husband died June 22, 1991, and she moved back to Bader Villa in Central City in 1994. She enjoyed needlework, traveling and spending time with her family. Survivors include two daughters and sons in law, Diane and Gary Clayton of Central City and Michaela and Wayne Nelson of Fresno., Calif., and three grandchildren. Apr 2005: His family updated per email from Shirley Burbach Cantrell. Central City Republican Nonpareil Funeral services for Willard Pfenning, Chapman, were held Saturday afternoon in Grand Island. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr Pfenning, 50, a resident of the Chapman community and an employee of the Sink & Baer Cleaners in Grand Island, died Wednesday evening following a month's illness. Willard R Pfenning was born January 20, 1909 in Grand Island to John & Emma Pfenning. At an early age he went with his parents to York and later to Columbus where he received his schooling. He and Miss Doris Walter were married Sept 30, 1937 at Columbus. He learned the cleaning trade and was employed by the Jackson Cleaners of Columbus for 18 yrs. In 1942 they moved to Sidney where he was employed until his induction into the armed forces on June 10, 1943. He served in the Astatic Pacific theater until July 21, 1944. In 1950 they moved to Chapman and he took employment with Sink & Baer Cleaners of Grand Island. He is survived by his wife, sons Richad and Steven and daughter Janette all at home, brother George, Clay Center, sisters Mrs Alice Kinnie, Denver, Mrs Louise Mitchell, San Diego, Mrs Ed Darling, Cedar Rapids, Mrs Eula Kramer, Schuyler, Mrs Christine MacWillie, Lakewood, Cal and Mrs Elizabeth Green, Aurora, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
