When Duane was about the age of 10 or 11 he had Polio. However, it was not known until he was in high school. While getting a sports physical the doctor informed Duane's mother that he had had Polio. Thinking back it was realized that at the age of 10 or 11 there was a time when he was very ill, but it was thought, at the time, that it was the flu or some similar illness. He had run a very high temperature and was hallucinating. This would have been in 1953 or 1954. It left him with one side of his chest less developed than the other.
