Pop Culture – Two YouTube Videos Analyzed


Although there are sex experts using social media as platforms to educate people about sexual health, the majority of social media users prefer to watch videos created by pop culture, which contain abundant rhetoric. In this section, two videos about sexual health education will be rhetorically analyzed. We selected one video from a Chinese YouTube channel “intownvideo” and another made by American YouTuber “lacigreen”. Both intownvideo and lacigreen are YouTube channels which mainly focus on sexual health education. They are well aware that the audience of their channel is mainly teenagers and young adults who want to explore more sexual health related content.

This paragraph is a quick overview of the two selected videos. First, the English translation of the title of the Chinese sex education video is “how dirty is girls’ ‘little sister’? you might be washing it wrong for 20 years! Let’s learn how to maintain your ‘little sister’ smell good and look nice! It’s said that guys can understand too!” It is staged at as a cooking show where a character Chef Milos instructs the audience how to “prepare” a pomelo, which is a metaphor of the vagina. The detailed rhetoric uses in this video will be examined in the following paragraphs. Second, the American pop culture sex education video is named “10 SECRET VAGINA FACTS”. Like the name suggests, in this video, the YouTuber Laci Green introduced ten facts about the vagina in a humorous way.
