 Our Facilitator: Dr. Stephanie L. Tatum

 Stephanie L. Tatumearned herPh.D. in Sociology of Education and MA in Educational Policy Analysis from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her BA in Political Science is from Texas Southern University. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Graduate Department of Educational, Administration, Leadership, and Technology at Dowling College in Long Island, New York. Prior to joining the Dowling Faculty, she was the Principal at an elementary school in Urbana, Illinois.

Dr. Tatum’s research interests include: multicultural education, multiculturalism in social organizations, African Americans and educational expansion, culturally relevant pedagogy, women in leadership, sociological-historical analysis of low educational achievement, the role of families in educating students placed at risk of academic failure, and instructional technology. She has publications in national and international journals, as well as a book chapter in an edited volume funded by the Ford Foundation. She presents her research, chairs sessions, and is a discussant at several refereed national and international conferences; she also serves on peer review panels for refereed professional organizations that focus on research in education.

Dr. Tatum has received numerous awards for outstanding leadership and social justice, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award for the City of Champaign in Illinois. She is the recipient of the New York State Association for Women in Administration (NYSAWA) Ann Meyers Award, which recognizes individuals committed to mentoring educational leaders. Dr. Tatum was recognized by the 2010 and 2011 President and Executive Director of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for her outstanding research skills on the peer review panel.

Ms. Silvana Velarde

A Mass media Communicator & a Visual Artist with a mind an eye for innovation, creativity and image development. Born in Lima, Peru.  She is pursing an MBA in management and leadership at Dowling College. She has been practicing photography since 2000 in the areas of journalism, commercial, social and studio photography. She has worked in a major newspaper from Peru, Diario El Comercio, collaborated in Newsday and Diario La prensa, from NY, and participated in several photo exhibitions both in Peru, Lima and United States, Florida/New York. Her goal in life is to combine all her skills, expertise and knowledge to deliver the best in every job.

She is currently working in Photography and graphic Design as a freelance. One of her projects is to develop a non-profit organization based on a photography workshop to help a community of street children and autistic kids in her home country. She was honored to be the president of the International Club during her Bachelors at Dowling College. She enjoys learning about other cultures while attending and organizing international events. She loves learning languages and cooking foods with her international friends. For sports and hobbies she loves drawing and painting, running, tennis and going rock climbing.
Mr. Harold Solis

Harold A. Solis was born in Nicaragua in 1988.  Having grown upin New York City, he witnessed frustration and suffering in the immigrant community. As a result he became passionate about pursuing a career as an immigration lawyer.  After graduating from St. Francis College in 2010, he received his law degree from Cardozo Law School in 2012.  As a law student Harold worked tirelessly at the HIV Law Project, where he helped immigrants seek asylum to escape persecution.  He also worked at the New York City Law Department, where he assisted in representing New York City in state court.  Today, as an immigration attorney, Harold practices in all aspects of U.S. immigration law.

Ms. Ana Maria Cobo de Paci

Mrs. AnamariaCobo de Paci was born in Quito, Ecuador, and raised by her mother in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She currently resides in Pennsylvania. She holds Masters in College Administration and Counseling from New York University (NYU) and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts and Business Administration from Saint John’s University. She is currently pursuing her ED.D. in Education, Leadership and Technology from Dowling College. Mrs. Cobo de Paci has served as an administrator at Columbia University, Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania, Stony Brook Southampton. Currently, Ms. Cobo de Paci manages her own business ACP consulting for first generation Latino/a student going to college. Additionally, Mrs. Cobo de Paci has a distinguished career of twenty years in Higher Education as an administrator, counselor, leadership trainer, researcher, and consultant.

Currently Mrs. Cobo de Paci served as the Director for the University of Pennsylvania Center for Hispanic Excellence “La Casa Latina.” In this role she has developed innovative strategies to help promote Latino recruitment, retention, and academic excellence through her continued research of Latino issues. Furthermore in this position she is responsible for educational, social, cultural, and academic programs aimed at raising awareness of the Latino community. As former chair of the Latino Caucus and member of the advisory board for the National Conference of Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education in America, Mrs. Cobo de Paci has been instrumental in presenting workshops and facilitating discussions on the sociocultural development of Latino/a students. In addition, she serves as a consultant to several faculty, administrators, and high schools possessing Latino/a students who are facing social, cultural, and academic difficulty. Mrs. Cobo de Paci continues to dedicate her career to the research of Latino/a student issues surrounding their transition into predominately white institutions. In addition, Mrs. Cobo de Paci has presented numerous workshops on Latino/a students, faculty and staff, as well as multicultural issues in higher education at national conferences and educational institutions across the country.

My Name is Tagasichani Peralta I'm graduating with a B.A in Sociology/ anthropology with a minor in psychology I plan to do my masters in social work or criminal justice.
Mr. Osman Canales

 My name is Osman Canales, 24 years old. I am a student at Suffolk County Community College, major in Psychology. I am a young activist for immigrant rights and President/Founder of Long Island Immigrant Student Advocates. An Organization dedicated to empower the lives of immigrant students on Long Island. I was born in El Salvador, I came to the United States when I was 10 yrs old to live on Long Island. I came with my family looking for a better life, with a bag full of dreams. Like most immigrants I confronted many challenges, but I never gave up.

I am the first and only one from my family to attend College. My goal is to become a lawyer, to advocate for humans and immigrant rights. I believe we all have a mission to accomplish in this world and my mission is to advocate for social justice and help my community. I have received a number of awards for my work in the community; In 2011 I was chosen as one of the “NY 40 Under 40 Rising Latino Stars” By The Hispanic Coalition NY Inc. I have also received recognitions from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other community Organizations.

Dr. Ramon-Osvalo Gonzalez

 Ramon-Osvaldo Gonzalez, born in Paraguay, earned his MBA and Doctoral Degree at Dowling College. His undergraduate degrees include; BA on Aeronautical Science – Professional Pilot at Farmingdale State College. He also earned his AS at Nassau Community College in Computer Science and holds a Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Dr. Gonzalez is a full time Assistant Professor at Farmingdale State College in the Department of Aviation, School of Engineering Technology since 2006. Having served as Department Program Coordinator and Chair, he now spend his time teaching and mentoring students research.

Dr. Gonzalez’s research interest include: student’s ethics, aviation safety, and human factor in complex systems. His publications include national and international peer reviewed journal and conference proceedings. Dr. Gonzalez is very active in the University Aviation Association (UAA) where he chairs the Professional Development Committee and also serves on peer review panels for the Collegiate Aviation Review refereed journal. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the City of Glen Cove Substance Abuse Free Environment (SAFE), AOPA Air Safety Institute, and the FAA Safety Team.
