Ms. Monica Martinez

Suffolk Legislature (9th LD)

I immigrated to the United States from El Salvador at the age of 3. My mother, in search of a better life for her children, left me with my grandmother at the age of one. It was extremely difficult for my mother to leave her family but I believe the journey she endured, shaped the strong family values and bond which exists amongst the family today.

To this day, I live at home with my mother and father to support them as they supported me throughout my upbringing. When I arrived in the US, I attended public schools. I started my educational career in Lynbrook, Nassau County and I graduated from Brentwood High School in 1995 with a Regents diploma and went on to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in History at Binghamton University. I graduated in 1999 and continued my education at NYU where I obtained a Masters in secondary social studies education. At that point in time I felt a strong need to return to my community and reciprocate what was given to me.

I decided to become a Social Studies teacher in Brentwood. I have since been employed by Brentwood UFSD for 13 years. In 2006, my mentor inspired me to pursue an administrative degree. He helped me realize that as an administrator I could offer the Brentwood children more than staying in the classroom. Therefore I enrolled in Stony Brook University and obtained my professional diploma in Administrative Leadership in 2008. I have been a successful assistant principal at East Middle School since.
