First wife was Jeanette Campbell. Her mother was a well-to-do Scottish woman. Did not approve of the marriage—thought Jeanette was marrying beneath her. Jeanette had TB but said she would marry Dan if she knew she would die tomorrow. He begged Dan to let them adopt him, promised he would educate and treat him as well as his daughter, but Dan wanted to keep his children together. Evans: Their uncle named Perry, who married Artie Summerville, was appointed guardian of the three orphans. Mrs. Summerville, mother of their Aunt Artie, was the owner of a large farm and was a tyrant who impressed everyone into a forced labor position at every opportunity. After several years of this unpaid work, Gifford was ordered to get the horses and plow, report for work on "Mammy Summerville's" farm for more work. Whereupon, he told Uncle Perry that he could beat him until he was worn out, but that he, Gifford, would not under any circumstances work for that woman again. Gifford said that Uncle Perry was very much surprised and taken back by this announcement, but told Giff that if that was the way he felt about it, that was the way it would be. And from that day Gifford said that he felt he was a man who increased several inches in stature.
