17 Dec 1837 wrote the following letter to Ezekiel Downing of Auburn, Lincoln County, Missouri - now (1970) in the possession of his great-grandson L. B. Downing, RR 1, Elsberry, Lincoln County, Missouri. The letter was written in Martinsville, Falls of the Platt, in the Platte Purchase area of northwest Missouri - Harrison County. Frank Williams.

Frank Williams also writes: In the fall of 1970 in the Pennsylvania State Library, Harrisburg, I found this entry in The Lintzbergers of America, 1750-1947, J. E. Lintzberger, 1948, p358 "Rebecca Lintzberger was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania June 23, 1825. In April 1842 she went with her parents by boat from Hillsboro, Pennsylvania to western Missouri, being on the water one month. The following year they moved to Stewartsville, Missouri. On september 24, 1845 she married Ezekiel Downing. She was a pilot on her father's river boats and it is said she knew the river as well as her father. It appears they lived at Newmark, for they are both buried there..." Mr. Williams continues "This reference to an unknown Ezekiel Downing has been a question mark until I read the above letter. Now it seems clear. Westeon is on the Missouri River just above Kansas City. Stewartsville is a short distance east of St. Joseph and just across the Platte River, and New market is just above Weston. All are in the Platte Purchase or, in the case of Stewartsville, just outside its borders. It would appear to be almost a certainty that the Ezekiel Downing referred to in this Lintzberger entry was a son of John Downing, and a nephew of Ezekiel Downing of Lincoln County, Missouri."

Farmer 92A, stock raiser.

“Ezekiel A. Downing, a farmer and stock raiser, is a native of Lincoln County, Missouri and was born in 1839. He is a son of Rev. Ezekiel and Margaret (Markle) Downing who were born in the ‘Blue Grass State’ in 1795 and 1796 respectively. The father became a resident of St. Charles County, Missouri when about eighteen years of age, and there married in 1815. They came to Lincoln County a year later, where they spent the remainder of their days. He was a thrifty farmer and was a successful and prominent Presbyterian minister. After the mother removed from Kentucky she live in Vincennes, Indiana for some time and then about 1802 removed to St. Charles County, Missouri. She is still living and resides on the old home farm. Her father David Markle, was born in Maryland and died in Lincoln County. Ezekiel A. Downing is the youngest of eleven children and received his education in the old log school-houses of early days. In 1866 he was married to Mildred J. a daughter of Ichabod and Elizabeth Davis, formerly of Kentucky and Virginia. Mr. Downing has lived on a farm adjoining the old home place for a number of years. He owns ninety-two acres, all under fine cultivation and well improved. He is one of the first citizens of the county and is trusted and esteemed by all who know him. He votes the Democratic ticket.”
