    • Abstract: Capstone courses (sometimes called keystone courses) are a common feature in undergraduate business curricula. This paper describes and draws lessons from the authors’ experience teaching statistics, information systems, and the capstone seminar involving business research methods at the University of Puerto Rico, the primary educational and research institution in the Caribbean island. This particular capstone course, a final year seminar on business research methods, focuses on the solution of a real-world managerial problem. The authors argue for changes in the teaching of introductory business statistics and in the business curricula. The proposed changes create a consistent focus on statistics and research in business programs. These changes should ensure that students come to capstone courses properly equipped, which, in turn, permits capstone courses to better prepare them for their professional life.

    • Abstract: Marketing is an essential function for a company to successfully compete in a dynamic competitive scenario and is seen increasingly as critical to the success of any organization (Moorman and Rust, 1999). Puerto Rican small and medium sized enterprises (SME) face the competition from transitional firms with big budgets and sophisticated marketing systems which places the pressure on local marketing managers to implement strategies and tactics to help their companies achieve success in the globalized marketplace. The proposed study could provide valuable insight as to what skills marketing professionals must master in the context of temporary competitive marketplace. This, in turn, is valuable for academic institutions to ascertain needs related for curriculum update and development. On the other hand, knowing about how successful native companies gauge marketing performance and achieve.

Designing and implementing efficient and effective distribution networks is of the great importance for their success. This research has three main objectives as follows: 1) describing, studying, and analyzing the actual distribution networks; 2) evaluating and suggesting possible improvements to the actual designs; and 3) justifying future research in the distribution network and supply chain arena following the improvements suggested by the second objective.

    • Abstract: This paper brings further discussion to the relationship between information and communication technologies (ITCs) and development, concentrating on education on developing countries. Authors explore technolgy deployments in education, mainly in Latin America to propose reasons why ITC transfer approaches have failed to provide sustainable advancement in education. Two factors are developed in this study: the careless import of ICTs without considering the social and environmental conditions in which technology is being deployed, and the cultural gap between teachers in Latin America that poses challenges when digital immigrants try to educate a new generation of digital natives.

    • Abstract: "Social enterprises" are usually entitled to preferential treatment from governmental and corporate benefactors under the premise that they legitimately contribute to the public good. This paper is an analytic review that builds on previous work. It presents an initial version of an organizational diagnostic instrument to be administered in a case by case basis that could assist stakeholders, policy makers, regulators, collaborators and the general public assess the degree of an organization compliance with a set of criteria internationally recognized as emblematic of the "social enterprise" connotation. By means of this tool a more precise judgment of true social enterprises might be reached on account of their actions.

    • Abstract: Hispanics are the fastest-growing, second-largest population group in the U.S. The impact food advertising claims can have on them has not been studied. Hispanics are at an increased risk of becoming obese (Obesity and Hispanic Americans, 2011). Therefore, it is important to study how they can be influenced to make better food choices. Given that media is one of the main sources people use to obtain health/nutrition information (Harris, Bargh & Brownell, 2009), marketers meed to know how information conveyed through advertising can impact attitude toward the ad and brand, and purchase intentions. Three commonly used health/nutrition claims were evaluated under premises established by the economics of information theory, the dual-mediation and independent influence hypotheses. More detailed/objective claims were expected to have more positive communication effectiveness. An experimental study revealed no major differences in communication effectiveness as a result to exposure to different claim types. Exceptions were noted.
