Communication and language across the curriculum are given priority throughout the FI document as part of the instructional principles guiding second-language (FL2) acquisition. In French Immersion, the second language of the students is the medium of instruction for all subject areas.

Instructional Principles Guiding Second-Language Acquisition

Although both language curricula are created with goals, the ELA curricula encompasses 3 goals (Comprehend and Respond, Compose and Create, and Assess and Reflect) and the FI curricula for grades 3 and above include 10 goals categorized into 5 domains, which are illustrated in the following table:
