Acknowledgements
The team would like to thank the Automobile Club de L’Ouest for the opportunity to compete at Le Mans for the second year in succession. PK Sport recognise that this is indeed an honour and hope that by continuing to compete in high profile races and championships with a professional and competitive effort that they will continue to represent the hopes of Britains Porsche owners and GT Sportscar fans in the future.
To enable this professional and competitive effort PK Sport would also like to thank our main sponsors, Pirelli, HR Owen and AON Insurance without whom the task would be impossible. It is only fitting that the final thanks go to those who make up the team themselves, without the total commitment of over twenty dedicated individuals who make up Team PK Sport we would not be the leading Porsche Motorsport team in the UK and one of the fastest, most professional teams racing Porsches in the world. Thank you all.

Team Profile

  • Mike Pickup (Team Principal) and Caroline Lucas (Finance Director) have been involved in Porsche Motorsport since the inception of the Porsche Club one make series 17 years ago. Within the Porsche Club Series Mike has managed customer cars, and competed himself personally, with numerous successes that include 4 Overall Championship Titles and 13 Class Championships.

  • Success for the team came both in the UK and in the Far East where PK Sport ran customer cars on behalf of motorsport clients. During 1996 the team decided to further its motorsport ambitions and embarked on implementing an international Porsche GT programme.

  • Initially the team competed the then Class 3 of the 1997 British GT Series in a Porsche RSR achieving 5 Class wins from 6 outings. The following year the team expanded its operation by moving into Class 2 and running a full programme for two Porsche GT2’S and a Porsche RSR.

  • During 1999 PK Sport consolidated its position and ran 2 Porsche GT2’s in the British GT Series and a Porsche 993 in the club series, training and advising the drivers who were all essentially newcomers to both GT and Porsche racing. The Porsche GT2 was the second most successful GT car in 1999 and the Porsche 993 finished third in Class 1 behind the dominant 996’s.

  • In 1999 the team also attended the Daytona 24-hour race supporting an American Porsche team to Class victory. The following year at Daytona 2000 PK Sport ran its own Porsche GT3R, which was lying 2nd in class and 14th overall at the 21st hour until a mechanical breakdown ensued. In 2001 PK Sport were lying 5th in class and 21st overall when an accident forced retirement.

  • In 2000 the team ran in the British GT Series with 2 Porsche GT3R’s and 2 Porsche GT2’s. PK Sport was the most successful British GT Team remaining unbeaten in the last 5 rounds of the Championship and was awarded the British Team Trophy by the BRDC and the Porsche Factory.

  • 2001 saw a major step onto the international scene – the 2001 European Le Mans Championship and 2001 24 Heures du Mans – the results speak for themselves

  • a podium finish at Donington against the factory Porsches and BMW’s,

  • finishing at Le Mans in the teams first attempt - 16th overall (48 starters)

  • class victory at Most in the Czech Republic

  • the European Le Mans Series GT Class Championship title

  • 2002 has started very well for the team with a podium finish in the opening American Le mans Series event, the Sebring 12 Hours. The team goes to Le Mans with a strong expectation of taking home the GT title.

PK Sport 2002 Season

PK Sport have focused their season around the best sportscar races in the world ensuring that the team learns, develops and improves by competing against the very best endurance racing teams in the sport. The season has already opened with the glorious golden anniversary of the Sebring 12 hour race where PK Sport proved that they could run with the best in the world with a fastest lap only eight thousands away from the class winning Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT3-RS. Had it not been for a freak incident early on in the race it would have been a challenge for victory.

The season was planned to revolve around the 24 Heures du Mans and thus the team were delighted to be selected from the massive entry received by the ACO to compete in the June classic. The team go to Le Mans looking for a class victory and will then return to the United States for further American Le Mans Series events focusing on taking the battle to Alex Job Racing once more for the Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta.

PK Sport Le Mans 2002 - Key Team Members

Mike Pickup – Team Principal: A former championship winning driver, Porsche trained engineer and someone with a solid reputation for running an operation that is not only outstandingly quick but consistently finishes races - Mike Pickup lives in London and has a daughter with Caroline who at less than a year old attended her first Le Mans in 2001! Mike is looking forward to this years Le Mans like no other race in his career, “We can win this race and bring the GT title to the UK, that’s all that the team have been focused since 10:30pm on March 16th and all they will remain focused on until 4pm on Sunday 16th June”.
Caroline Lucas – Finance Director: A former championship winning driver also and the first woman to win a national British championship Caroline combines a full time job with a global logistics company, looking after daughter Jo and the no less challenging but generally more interesting tasks associated with PK Sport. Caroline was in charge of the #61 car which took 5th place at Sebring and believes that this is as good a chance that the team are ever likely to have of a Le Mans victory.
Robin Liddell – Driver: From the day eight years ago when he won his first ever race from pole position and took the fastest lap, until September 2001 when he became the European Le Mans Series GT Champion with PK Sport, Robin has clearly been a driver going places. Robin was a British Racing Drivers Club Rising Star driver and is still supported under the BRDC young drivers initiative. He is fresh from a podium at Sebring he will be racing at his first Le Mans with his sights set on a class victory. At the Le Mans test Robin clocked the second fastest GT time despite having never driven the track before.
David Warnock – Driver: David Warnock has won the British GT2 title twice (1996,1999) and the overall British GT title in 2001, he has more British GT wins than any other driver. No stranger to success at international level David also won the GT class at the Rolex 24 Hour race in 1999 driving a Roock Porsche. David is married to Dawn and has three children, 2002 will see him driving at Le Mans for the fourth time.
Piers Masarati – Driver: Piers is a Team PK Sport regular and is very familiar with the car and the team. Piers recently led the #61 car to a superb 5th place in the Sebring 12 hours and is fully focused on what he admits is the biggest challenge of his career. Like Robin Liddell, Piers’ first experience of Le Mans was the recent test where he put in some very fast consistent times whilst learning the circuit. Piers has raced Porsche’s since 1995 and despite being only 24 he has a wealth of experience behind him.
Adrian Slowey – Senior Engineer: Adrian (33) has been with PK Sport for 4 years, he has 16 years experience with marques such as Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. Adrian was born in Nottinghamshire but now lives close to the teams race headquarters in London with his wife and three children. His most memorable moment so far in motorsport was finishing at Le Mans in 2001 and climbing on top of the car to take it parc ferme.
Kieron Marchant – Engineer: Kieron has been with PK Sport for just over a year and brought with him over 12 years of experience from other racing backgrounds. Kieron is 28 years old and was born in Aylesbury where he still lives. Kieron finds it difficult to pick his most memorable motorsport moment and some of the ones he can remember cannot be put in print but above all he puts the 2001 Le Mans experience and hazy memories from the Brighton speed trials.
Nigel Ratcliffe – Engineer: Nigel has been with PK Sport for over two years and amongst his 15 years of experience he can include looking after a couple of American drag racing cars. Nigel was born in Amersham 31 years ago and now also lives in Aylesbury. Perhaps unsurprisingly he also puts the 2001 Le Mans race as the most memorable moment in his motorsport career.
