Course Assessment

  • One final exam: 100%, 2 hours, closed books, during Summer Term.

Exam preparation

  • Practice questions are simple questions, which can either be conceptual or numerical. Short answers to all of these questions will be posted on Moodle. We will not go over the answers in class every week because, as you’ll see, this won’t be necessary. But from time to time we will devote some of our lecture time to discuss some of the more challenging questions. If there is any practice question that you wish we would cover in class, please let me know in advance (for example, by email).

  • Some of you may want additional practice problems. You may find some of the end-of- chapter problems from our recommended books (BDM, see below) useful. However, I think it’s better not to overinvest in problem sets. You need to strike a reasonable balance between practice questions and reading/thinking about the material. I think that students often tend to do too much of the former and too little of the latter. I think that our study and practice questions should be enough.

  • We will make use of case studies (using Excel); I will give you some “formative” assignments that also require working with Excel. Some of the longer Excel exercises will be carefully discussed in class.

Readings

There are two kinds of readings: Compulsory and recommended. Everything we talk about during the lectures and on the lecture notes is examinable. All compulsory readings are examinable. Recommended readings are not examinable, in the sense that nothing that is covered only in these readings will be in the exam. However, these readings may be helpful as preparation for the exams.

Compulsory readings include the lecture slides and some case studies. All these readings will be made available on Moodle (you may need to follow a link to download some of them).

We will not follow any book, but I offer one suggestion as recommended readings only:

  • (BDM) Berk and DeMarzo, “Corporate Finance.”, 4th ed. (other edition will work as well)

This is a very long book, and we’ll cover only a small fraction of the material in there (and a lot of what we’ll cover is not covered in these books).
